    Custom build (first timer)

First off I just wanna say this is an awsome group of people on this site, everyone on here makes a new guy to the black rifle scene feel very comfortable with there wealth of knowlage and hospitality...with that said on to my problem, ive receintly became very interested in the M4 or black rifle. Ive ben a self proclamed gun nut, and im localy known as the gunsmith for my community.ive built a couple dozen custom 700 remingtons,a few 40x's, and im well known for my tricked out 10/22's..but ive never messed with any AR of any breed. But im lookin for a challenge and I beilieve a M4 is exactly what I need to ease my pain. So long story short im I need help choosin a basic platform to get started. One that is functinal, economial, and accurate..and of coarse easy on the eyes. Please remember I know as much about this gun as I do flyin commercial aircraft. So be gental and patient. Im lookin for a good upper, and lower mainly to shoot preditors and a little paper. But not anything worthy of national match. Any help would b greatly appriciated. Also prices ballpark guesses will wrk just to get a ruff idea. Thanks BRD III

What does "easy on the eyes" mean to you?

Any BCM carbine or midlength upper with MOE handguards would do you fine. You can order a BCM complete lower from Grant at G&R for about $350 or put together your own for a similar price - its not hard, you've obviously got some mechanical skill and with a little browsing here you could easily do it. The upper with bcg and handguards would run about $600 giving you a grand total of $950 give or take.

That would be an excellent starting point and you can always deck out the upper later. Every time I look at the pic threads here I get all these crazy ideas of how I want to reconfigure my current carbine upper There are hundreds of ways to set up your weapon.

    Is this a personal rifle?

Find a copy of TM 9-1005-249-23 RIFLE 5.56MM (or TM 9-1005-319-23 same manual newer edition), memorize it.

Start with THIS, than add some Magpul MOE stuff. Pick a lower, and your set.

If figured that would be pretty obvious based of the description on the website. Which you would also get from BCM the same time with the rifle

what I ment by easy on the eyes is just a good lookin rig. Acuracy and reliabilty are most important but it has to look good as it functions.you know walk the walk if you will.

Yes this is a personal rifle, thats what makes it so hard to decide on. Im used to buildin rifles for customers and they are pretty straight foward. And hopefully I can use this gun to expand my bussness and let customers have somethin to try before they buy.

What is everyones opinion on a remington lower? Ive always ben a huge fan but this is a whole new ballgame.

Im from the school of thought that says, if your weapon does its job every time, its a sexy son-of-a-bitch! There are 2 reasons to own a "fighting" weapon; one is to punch paper and make friends at the range, the second is to use said weapon to defend the lives of those you love. Thats the only 2 reasons. Looks are objective, and an afterthought.
As far as the remington lower is concerned, a lower is a lower is a lower, if they are of quality fit and finish. I use Spikes a lot, cause they make good lowers, but I also use BCM and Colt, which are considered the pinnacle of AR "goodness". I reccomend you go with a know company, that has deep "roots" in the AR business. Try Colt, BCM, LMT, Spikes, DD, Mega, Noveske, etc...... All of these WILL be in spec, and WILL work on your chosen upper.
Your in a good spot that most of us dont find ourselves in often. You have the means to start from scratch. A lot of us have parts lying around, and decide to build off of them. If I was in your shoes, I would build slowly, as money builds up, and assemble the rifle that I wanted. Dont settle, do it right the first time.
Take my advice any way you want, but be sure to remember that if you buy quality parts, you just buy once.

If you'd like a Remington rollmark and don't have to pay too much extra for it, go for it. To me the rollmark means something since it's what other see when they inspect your rifle. And a rollmark like Colt or S&W can increase the selling price of a rifle if you ever had to do that. Conversely if your lower says Bob's Junkyard, well you get the idea.

What really matters are the LPK, stock kit and of course the upper receiver and you've had excellent recommendations already - BCM, DD, etc.
