This is all good input, thanks.
It really does seem that there is no "good" reason NOT to have some sort of optics. "Cover all your bases".

So I ask, are you a John Wayne man or a Woodie Allen guy?

Aside from advantages in low-light and speed, a quality RDS excels when in unconventional shooting positions.

The only reason to not have any optics is if they are not suited for the job or of such poor quality that they hinder shooting

Where an RDS comes into real advantage is speed and longer low light situations. Case in point...at one point I was the only person in my unit with an RDS, and we were doing some pre-deployment training. We taped glow sticks to green ivans at 25 meters, and shot at them at night. 20rds each. I hit all 20 using my RDS. I forget the exact numbers but I think the next highest score was around 10 with most hitting around 5/20. A few zeros.

Last...despite what some people say irons are not infallible, either.
Predeployment nightfire qual for me was a nightmare. Lights on, get your sightpicture, hold it, lights off, shoot. I was one of the last ones to qualify and I qualified expert on everything else, very rarely did I need more than 1 try. M4, M9, 240, 249, AT 4, MK19, 203.

I love iron sights and hate bulky/heavy guns, but an RDS for a serious business weapon is far far superior to irons, especially in really low light or near-darkness where you just cant see your irons at all.

Yes at accross the room distances you don't need sights of any kind and point shooting is the rule, but as distance increases beyond those very short ranges the RDS can still get the job done - if you can see the target at all then you can put a round on it even at longer ranges.

RDS is extremely quick also - put the dot on it and fire.
