    Hi jwfuhrman,
I have heard and watch Ab Rollers promo on TV but never used them so can't say anything about them but do make best use of your treadmill, elliptical and keep doing crunches and pus ups.
Do add eggs, protein shakes, fish, nuts and fat free dairy in your daily meal. Do make sets and set goal to do exercise.

Ab rollers and all those other late-might informercial devices aren't really any better than crunches for toning the abdominal muscles. Add an inclined board if higher intensity is desired.

It isn't possible to "target" specific areas for loss of subcutaneous fat. Crunches or ab rollers will only affect the muscles that are being used. They have no effect on the overlying fat.

Ive come to the realization that I need to get over my self pity, my woe is me shit.

I was fine for awhile, actually started losing weight, was down to 295 until about a year and half ago. I was playing Semi-Pro Paintball for a local team, traveling the country to compete in various events(Phoenix, Charlotte, Chicago, Orlando to name a few). But with being 23 and not being the fastest guy, I was getting pushed more and more into a coaching role, rather than playing.

So skip ahead a year and 80lbs later, Im back to my fat self, feeling sorry for myself again when my best friend, who was on the team with me, who "retired" at the same time because he saw what the coaching staff and other players were doing to push me out of the way and off the team suggested that we both should check out a local USPSA match. I said sure, always had fun shooting, shot at Camp Perry a few times in High School.

Alas, my new addiction. First it was pistol only, then I found 3gun and have a HUGE passion for that. In my first season of shooting 3gun and carrying on to this season, I have yet to place below 7th at the various 3guns Ive shot in, and was asked to be a part of the Inagural Indiana State 3gun series.

Thus comes my problem. I feel that I will never place higher than what I have, without being "faster".

So I come to you guys, my fellow M4C'ers for advice on what I should do for a training routine. Something to get me out of Heart Attack Alley and back in shape. Maybe not the 205 I was as a High School Hockey Defensive man, but not a 300lbs+ fat ass like I am now.

I'd like to be down to 250lbs in a year and a half or 2. Thats 100lbs I'd like to lose. My best friend, the one who basically saved me from my depression by getting me to go along to my first USPSA match is getting married June 2nd 2012, and I'd like to be in better shape by then. Even if its just 50-60lbs.

I have access to a treadmill, an eliptical and yea, I bought one of those "Ab Rollers" off tv to help with doing crunches and push ups.

Just any advice on a type of diet and fitness routine would be great. Be advised.... I raise my own beef, pork and chicken.... so not eating meat is 100% out of the question haha.
You can do it. Don't do anything so drastic you won't be able to maintain it for the rest of your life. Its a life style change. I got disgusted with myself back in July and started on the road to fitness. I have lost 66 pounds so far. Running has helped a lot. I also cut way back on red meat, carbs and fats. I eat small meals fairly often and lots more salads.

I've been doing a weight loss program called Ideal Protein. It consist of minimal carbs and high protein. I've gone from 260 in June to 170 during the first week of November. My wife has had similar loss.

    What works for me
    1. Lift weights 3x a week.
    2. 1 gram of protein for every lb of lean mass.
    3. Adjust calories for desired weight loss.

    What I don't believe matters-
how many times a day i eat
if i eat right before bed
    diet cokes
    glycemic index of fruit
    bad carbs
    etc.

    My routine:

Eating less than 2,000 calories a day (sticking with more vegetables and simple foods). Try to be more active with just daily activities such as walking to the grocery store.

I road and mountain bicycle roughly 10 - 40 miles daily during the spring and summer. Winter months when it is darker, I run and do interval work outs on the bicycle trainer, interval work outs via aerobics. Recently picked up trail running which mixes lots of elevation changes.

Honestly, I dropped 15 pounds alone from cycling and it really helped with my life style. I am a lot more active now compared to before.

What is the story on diet drinks and how they are bad for you?

There have been a bunch of articles in various magazines about how diet cokes make you gain weight.

The theory is that the taste conditions your body to expect calories. Ergo, they make you fat.

I drink plenty of diet coke. I don't eat anything afterwards.

My belief is that as long as calories taken in is less or equal to calories used, you don't get fat.

generally true, but it is not that simple. Your body does things differently with the intake depending on the condition it is in (i.e., the glycemic business, eating before you go to bed, etc. may induce your body to tend toward fat storage. Since you need the calories if you are taking in fewer than you use, they probably eventually get used but your body does react to calories different depending on conditions. People who eat the same amount of calories, but eat a different schedule, or glycemically different foods, for example, have drastically different results)
