I've heard a lot about this in the past and there are a few things I've come upon that vastly increase the ability for someone to disconnect from adrenaline and fog and maintain the ability to focus clearly and concisely during high stress situations in addition to repetitive training.

Learning to Juggle, believe it or not, vastly helps the brain learn to dissociate and focus. There have been many studies into this, and they have even found that learning to juggle actually increase the physical grey matter of the brain, in addition to increased synaptic connections.

Learning multiple languages, has a similar effect of juggling, it helps the brain take input in various forms all at once faster

Reciting numerical or alphabetical sequences in a certain pattern, say front to back or back to front, repetitively helps the brain develop increased synaptic functions.

After reading about the positive effects of learning to juggle last summer, I bought a very cheap set of balls and began practicing just randomly when I had free time. This past Christmas, my 2 yr old nephew fell in an in-ground pool and without even thinking or even being told, just simply hearing a splash I was already in the pool recovering him. I did not even realize what had happened until I was out of the pool, iphone destroyed, nephew saved. I strongly believe learning to juggle had a large part in reducing my reaction time, as funny as it seems.

I love Radiolab. I've listened to them all; they are very informative and strangely calming.

I struggle with keeping a positive outlook as I can tell there is a physical effect. It's not easy these days.

Yup, that seems to be well supported from what I read. Best summery i have heard from a researcher in this area was "pessimists are probably right but optimists usually live longer."

I wish I was an optimist by nature, but I aint.

It's true. I'm not the skinny little ****er I once was, but I am a lot meaner and a lot smarter than I was back when I could do 90 pushups in two minutes....and while I do need to get working on my condition again, there's no doubt in my mind that the 38-year-old me could destroy three of the 19-year-old 11B version of me, armed or unarmed.

In 1996, I had some kind of reaction to something at work that caused my neck to swell and my airway to constrict, resulting in a trip to the emergency room and some really awesome drugs.

We never found the initial cause of the reaction, but since that time, I can have this reaction when under stress or when exposed to some unknown cause.

I was at the end of my rope, when I read a book, whose name escapes me right now, about how Teddy Roosevelt beat his asthma through mind control techniques. The book superficially described some of the exercizes he engaged in, and I figured, WTF, what could I lose. So, the next time I experienced the precursor symptoms to my reaction, I worked on suppressing them with mental control exercizes, and what do you know, it worked.

I still get the initial symptoms, and it takes less and less effort to suppress them as time goes by. I am a true believer in the power of the mind.
