We have an indoor range at one of the local gunshops that doesn't require buying their ammo but does require brass cased factory loaded ammo in factory boxes (no reloads) for both rifle and pistol.

An outdoor public range to the south west of where I live allows only 1 round in the gun at a time. I'm not sure if this one is owned by the state or county.

We shoot on a designated range on the state game land. No range fees, no limits on rounds loaded. Just clean up after yourself and no full-auto (not in a class 3 state anyway).

I tend to shoot at a free outdoor public range. Only problem is around deer season when the public range is overrun by crazy, dangerous people.

In the fall, I drive to BFE or pay to inhale lead while shooting slowly.

No I actually meant frangibles. I realize they are generally lead-free. However, after a while I got tired of sweeping 2400sqft a couple times a day becuase of obvious remnants of frangible ammo. I try to run a tight ship. As for armor piercing, I have a trick up my sleeve. They are illegal in our county... My co-owner and I are both reserve Deputy Sheriffs, and our staff is made up of off-duty local LEO and Deputies. We have arrested 2 people for various illegal munitions in the past 15 years. Word gets around pretty easily. It does cause a bit of a stomach ache when the guy you pulled over last night comes in to shoot today.

I will admit that it's really hard not to become a jaded asshole. For instance, our targets are hung with 1.5" binder clips. The rule, clearly stated on the waiver form that all range users fill out prior to entering states, "if you shoot it, you buy it: Clips - ($2ea), Pulley/Rope ($10)..." Yet, these asshats circumvent the rule by bringing their own binder clips, shooting up a box of them, and then returning ours to us un-used. Here's why this is an issue: Binder clips do not cost $2 ea, but light bulbs, steel baffles, cinderblock walls, concrete floors, and God knows what else your bullet happens to ricochet into (because you're shooting too freakin' high and missing the target) do cost way more than $2. This is simply an effort to capture a fraction of these costs. (Our range rates are only $5 first 1/2 hr, $3 each additional 1/2 hr) By punishing only those that break stuff, we are able to keep our rates low. No matter what, though, there's always some jerk trying to circumvent the policy, or that gets irate when you charge him for damage to the facility.

From a shooter's perspective, I probably would be insulted if the range officer accused me of shooting something and I didn't, or gave me flack for rapid fire. However, I would also try to build repoir with the guy instead of writing him off or cussing him out, because I've been in his shoes.

Bullseye? I recognize the prices. And it is the only indoor game in town that allows buckshot. The outdoor clubs look better and better every time I go to any indoor range. There are just too many idiots that go to indoor ranges.

The range I used to work at restricted .223/5.56 ammo to store bought, this was to ensure no exotic round went down range. The biggest concern was tracers - the backstop would not fare well with a burning object in it. While most tracer ammo is clearly marked, I have encountered some in bulk lots of ball ammo where the tip marking was not present. Makes for a nice surprise and a bit of worry on a dry day.....

I refuse to shoot anywhere that wants to treat me like a child, charge excessive fees, and have stupid rules about ammo.

My local range, after buying a membership:

$10/day 1k yard range with lots of steel targets.
Shoot however you want as long as you are shooting into the berms.
Pick up your own brass, take it with you, or put it in their range bin.
$5/day tactical bays that allow NFA, and shoot however you want into the berm.
No ammo restrictions besides incendiary/tracer (TX where its hot and dry).
Range masters are cool, spot shots for people, friendly, and try to help newbies out.

A range Ive shot at a few times with ZERO plans to go back:

    $10/day
    Can only shoot off benches.
    Slow fire only.
    No FMJ
    300 yards max.
Range nazis who yell at people constantly, rude, and look over your shoulder all the time.
Make you keep CASED weapons pointed down range.

If your range sucks find a new one. Before my current range opened up I used to go to another one an hour and half each way just to avoid #2 above. Only went to 100 yards but I could shoot how I want, and they were friendly.
