    my ranges suck. we have TWO ranges. One public. One private.

    THe public one is ALWAYS crowded on weekends, 5 rounds per mag, no rapid fire. For the handgun side it's the same and the targets are freaken 35 yards away. Who the hell wants to shoot a handgun at NO CLOSER than 35 yards?

    The private range charges 15 a day i think....and you have to shoot their ammo. Which is about 70% higher than the dealer that i usually buy my ammo from. If you pay $400 you become a member for a year, they waive the range fee, but you still need to buy their ammo, which they drop by 20%. So i'm still paying 50% more than my usual dealer. Not only that, they only sell frangible ammo for rifles, which increases the cost of shooting rifles even more. To top it off, the range is only about 20 - 25 yards. Which is fine for pistols, but practically useless for rifles.

    There are a few choices here in Vegas but most are tourist traps wanting to shoot full auto. The one I use seems to attract a lot of LE which is never a bad thing in my mind. The staff there are all pretty cool, both in the range and the attached store. IIRC, the only restrictions are no tracers, steel case and you buy their ammo if you shoot a rental. $15 a day for pistol ranges and $20 for rifle which is 50 yards. I went with a membership which pretty much pays for itself with the amount I use it and the 10% off on ammo and accessories that you get.

    Alternatively, the Clark County Shooting Park they opened here is $7 a day for pistols and rifles. Outdoor facility with rifles out 200 to yards currently. I believe they have plans to make longer ranges too. I need to get out there some time to check it out.

    Near as I can tell, there's only Texas STATE Law for AP ammo, and it only applies to handgun ammo.

    § 46.05. PROHIBITED WEAPONS. (a) A person commits an
    offense if he intentionally or knowingly possesses, manufactures,
    transports, repairs, or sells:
    (1) an explosive weapon;
    (2) a machine gun;
    (3) a short-barrel firearm;
    (4) a firearm silencer;
    (5) a switchblade knife;
    (6) knuckles;
    (7) armor-piercing ammunition;
    (8) a chemical dispensing device; or
    (9) a zip gun.
    (e) An offense under this section is a felony of the third degree unless it is committed under Subsection (a)(5) or (a)(6), in which event, it is a Class A misdemeanor.
    I am VERY interested to learn which county this is and what the actual law says.

    We had one range around here in central MD that did require range-purchased ammo, but that changed relatively recently, apparently because of customer pressure.

    Yikes! I guess I am lucky to live in Arizona. Plenty of open desert to shoot in and a couple pretty good outdoor ranges as well.

    I do know this: The worse outdoor range is still better than the best indoor range.

    I pay $50.00 a year at my local (out in the country) conservation club.
    That includes 2-25 yd. pistol/shotgun ranges, 1-50 yd. rifle range. and 1-100 yd. rifle range (all outdoors).
    A key to get into the gate whenever I want, free camping, free fishing, a clubhouse, even port-a-potties!!
    I don' need no steenking indoor range!

    My local indoor range charges $1 per shot on the rifle lane. $20 per hour for pistol for non members, and $10 per if you pay a yearly $50 fee. Shoot your own ammo, and thank god because they are selling Winchester white box .45ACP 100 round packs for $75.

    I joined a private rifle club that's an hour away, and it is much better. Outdoor rifle and pistol. $100 to join and $50 to renew. 50, 100, 200, 300 yard rifle, and 25 yard pistol. Shoot all the armadillos you want because they're tearing up the berms. Trap practice every Thursday and Sunday.

    Sounds like Izaac Walton....we have the same here. Go shot whenever you want, 4 25 yrd pistol, multiple 100 yrd rifle positions, archery, trap, skeet, stocked ponds.....$100 to join, $100 annual membership fee, all outdoor. Only problem is you can't take guest, it's hard to convert people if they can't shoot. The other club that I belong to is the QSC, ranges from 7 to 1000 yards but you must have an RSO/OIC present and it takes coordination but you are allowed to bring guests. It is $80 annual to be a member.

    The local indoor range is okay but you can't shoot .223. If you are renting one of thier weapons, you must shoot their ammo....makes sense IMO. An hours worth of shooting plus targets came to 16 dollars.

    I would drive an hour too if that was my local range. Holy crap, $1 per shot?!?
