The overgassing doesn't have anything to do with the length of the gas system - it's a function of the barrel's gas port size. Bushies - like my ex-wife - have holes that are too big.

A dissipator barrel is basically a carbine barrel that has an extra front sight block stuck near the end of it. Length of barrel before and after gas port are the same as a carbine barrel.

About what you're trying to attempt - you could probably make it work. You're in for some headaches though, and truthfully you'd be better served by following the pros' advice and going a different route.

On the topic at hand. I think it's going to be a headache, but if you get it working, I'd be interested in a report afterwards.

That was him. He turned an 6 pound Rifle into an 8+ pound monstrosity using the cheapest knockoff and tacticool gear he could find.

Ahhh, a dude that uses the term "valve" to describe an AR feature while dinging folks for talking out their asses. Man-tastic.

I do SO love it when life provides us with these little ironies from time to time.

Short but sweet and to the point.
Some good stuff on that site Dave, it seems a good place to point guys to since, as mentioned before, it's hard to get people to read a ten page article.

I've owned a couple 'ground-up' piston guns and I won't be buying anymore. The weight and feel do nothing for me, so even if they're equally reliable, I still see no need for it. Most often the guys I see that want piston guns are the guys that aren't running their DI guns enough or training enough, and they think something better will come with the addition of a piston. I'm sure this isn't always the case, just a commonality I've seen with the guys interested in piston guns and conversions.

Do what ever you feel will work the best. You could tame the gas down with the valve.

Sorry, these jerks don't have a clue what you were talking about the closest they have come to a gas piston system is the stuff coming out of their axx.

    Actually Jim,

Theses "jerks" do have a clue & the advise they give is solid!

As for my experience with piston systems/conversions: Mine goes back to the late 80's/early 90's.

The Rhino Gas System(Conversion) It worked well for what it was but would break the carrier key screws after awhile. It was nice to adjust the FA cyclic rate of fire with a allen wrench. I sold that off years ago.

My recent experience(although not popular here) is with my friends LWRC M6A3 upper running on a Colt 16A1 lower.

The most we ever put thu it at one shooting was 2k(more since then) & it has not benn cleaned in over a year. I cringe that my friend doesn't clean it & he allowed me to clean the lower but not the upper(he wants to see how long with will run without maintenance)

It I was going to go with a Piston over DI, LWRC would be my only readably available choice.

If you come here to learn & for advise, come with an open mind. Take what works for you & leave the rest behind. Eventually you may come around.

I was reading this thread and thinking, did someone leave the door open over at TOS? A lot of this thread sounds very reminiscent of that site. Maybe we need a new category to lump these threads into;" escapees from TOS".

Now that's the type of crap that doesn't belong in these threads.

Dave, that was a nice articule on the gas system, well done.

Friends don't let friends install piston conversion kits in sub-standard AR-15s.

It might not be what you want to hear, but this thread is full of good advice. If you're not sure why, read through some stickies to familiarize yourself with the shortcomings of many big names in AR-15 manufacturing.
