(COLT MT6400) permanently installing muzzle brakes with tactical handguards

    Attachment 7987

I currently have a Colt match target M4 carbine on layaway at a local shop, an MT6400 I guess.

    $1399.99, 16" barrel, carbine length.

I live in CT where I can only have a muzzle brake/compensator on my barrel and it has to be permanently attached. Along with the other laws, (ex. no bayonet lug, pinned stock).

I wanted to eventually get the following installed onto my M4 after doing the basic stuff (ex. magpul pistol grip, PMAGS, BCM gunfighter charging handle, magpul trigger guard, magpul B.A.D. lever):

-EGW generation II AR post-ban compensator
    (http://egw-guns.com/store/index.php?...products_id=93)
    Attachment 7988

    good review on EGW comp
    http://coloradoshooting.org/egw.htm

    -LaRue Tactical 7.0" handguard
    (http://stores.homestead.com/Laruetac...tail.bok?no=46)
    Attachment 7990

-LaRue Tactical low profile gas block
    (http://stores.homestead.com/Laruetac...tail.bok?no=45)
    Attachment 7989

An Aimpoint Comp C3 with a larue mount and folding sights will come after the other larue accessories and muzzle brake

Now, I dont know if this is a stupid question but my concern is will the permanently attached compensator prevent me from being able taking off the handguard and gas block, for instance, if I ever wanted to swap out barrels. In other words would the comp. be too big for the gas block and handguard to fit over?

No gas block will fit over any muzzle device. Since you're going with a low-pro setup, you would be able to remove the rail whenever you please, however, the compensator would have to be removed in order to get the barrel nut and gas block off the barrel. You would be able to remove the barrel assembly, but the barrel nut and gas block would still stuck behind the comp.

wow thanks for the quick and informative response, another maybe stupid question though.

I dont have a proper setup/tools to install/remove accessories onto AR's..other than punches
When cleaning for storage of my AR do I need to take the handguard off and clean and lube in the handguard area of the barrel and barrel nut?
Do I even need to clean under the handguard and around the barrel nut???

You don't need to take it off. For long term storage, I would at least squirt some oil under the handguard. I have the 7" LaRue rail on my BCM carbine wtih a fixed fsb so I don't have the option of taking it off. I just squirt some clp under the handguard near the barrel nut and let it run down and spread out (Storing muzzle down).

If you do a quick search on this subject, there are a few other threads on it. Most folks will just hose out their handguards, blow it dry and call it a day.

Other options include: You could leave the existing brake on the barrel as it is considered permanently attached. When you want to remove the handguard, you can drive out the pair of pins and do whatever project is at hand...then reinstall the device with pins.

Or if you chose to forget about the Larue handguards, you could install the Knight's Armament RAS in place of the standard handguards. These would not be free floating units, but they are removable for cleaning purposes. Using these you could then have the permanently attached muzzle device of your choice.

My personal MT6400 has the Sully stock, Knight's RAS and a threaded muzzle with an A2 flash suppressor. I've been meaning to change the stock to an adjustable, but the Sully just works...so I keep putting it off.

You could also use a two piece rail like a Troy MRF [ http://troyind.com/%20/battlerails/t...lerail-mrf-c-7 ] which installs over a factory barrel nut.

Unless I am mistaken the DD Omega rails also can install onto factory barrel nuts and function the same way for a few more bucks.

You will have to cut the delta ring off but you do not need to touch the muzzle device.

Both can be easily [just a few hex bolts] removed if you wish for cleaning.

I live behind enemy lines [Band-State] as well and that was my decision to get a free float rail. I did go with a longer one and got a Troy rail that goes around the FSP but the idea is the same.

    nuthin but LT or DD

Im pretty set on the fact that I want a free floating handguard and Im not settling for anything less than LT or DD.

In fact I was 100% that I was guna go for the LT until I realized the little issue of cleaning the whole handguard area.

Some guys will say not to worry about this too much but Im OCD about cleaning my firearms and live in a very rust friendly, humid area.

The DD Omega rail got my attention because of the whole 2 piece true free float option. I can have a free floating handguard and still be able to take it apart and clean the area where the handguard sits.

In buying the DD over the LT would I be compromising anything?, they're both about the same price, its just that Ive done a lot of research on the LT handguards and in my opinion it seems as though there's nothing better out there.

Like I said I want to get a low pro gas block and get rid of the FSB so I can eventually install a set of BUIS, and dont 4get about my little perm. installed muzzle brake issue.

Btw, to me on this AR build, money is not a problem, this isnt just a plinking AR, I want to build a go to war gun that is going to be reliable and durable enough to put my life on the line.

Since you are running a C3, keep your FSB.

Have the rail you want installed and then install the MB you want. For me, I would go with the BattleComp.

    Welcome fellow CT resident.

Congrats on your fine purchase. Once you pick her up,get yourself out & get some trigger time in. That brake isn't the most sexy thing out there but it works well for what it is.
The DD Omega is a excellent choice & you might want to reconsider going the lopro gas block route. I was going that route on my BCM 11.5" & would up just keeping the stock sight base.(No issues with it & the RDS/rear buis)

Depending where in CT you are PM me & we can meet up at the range to compare setups!

    Edit:

I'll 2nd Grant on the Battlecomp.

I shot one this past weekend & it is a good alternative compared to my KAC 3T

do u guys really think i should keep the FSB?, whats the advantage?, i wanted the option of being able to fold both BUIS so i have a clear sight picture through the aimpoint.
