Value of Colt CAR-15 made in 1980?

My friend's dad has a Colt CAR-15 that he bought new in 1980. He fired less than 3,000 rounds through it (he claims it had zero malfunctions of any kind whatsoever) and it is in pristine condition. It does not have the forward assist. He is looking to sell it, and so I was wondering what the value is on something like this; I wouldn't mind getting it. I tried searching on GB, to no avail. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Probably because Colt never sold a CAR-15. Try searching "SP-1 Carbine".

My knee jerk no search answer would be between $900-$1K.

SP1 carbines usually run a bit higher.
If in really nice condition it could go for up to $1200.
If it has scratches and the "castle" nut has been removed, thus removing the paint around the staking, then $800-$900.
