    Lightweight duty build #2

Here's another lightweight build I just finished up for the purpose of work. Yes, I'm one of those "pencil" barrel freaks that people are now frowning upon.
The total weight minus mag is right around 7 pounds 2 ounces. Weight distribution of if I had to put a percentage would be 60 front/40 rear. I think an ACS or SOPMOD stock would really balance it out. I might have to try that. Balance > weight

She's going to be put through the ringer on Sat for zero and function. Not that it matters but the upper and lower fit is sort of sloppy. I did not expect that and the new Magpul mags I have DO NOT fit in the lower. Luckily I have several E-Mags I can use. Those go in and spit out like a champ.

    Upper:
    Vltor MUR-1A
    DD LW 14.5" midlength barrel
    BCE 1.5
Vltor gas block w/ BCM gas tube
    Troy/VTAC 11" handguard
    BCM Mod 4 charging handle
    ST NiB BCG
DD fixed front and rear BUIS
    Surefire X300
    EOTech EXPS3-2

    Lower:
    DD stripped lower
    GRTactical LPK
    Geissele SD-C
    BAD ASS selector
    Magpul MOE grip
    Magpul MOE trigger guard
Vltor A5 receiver and A5 buffer
    Magpul CTR stock
    Noveske QD end plate

Why did you use such a substantial upper?

Honestly because I got a really good deal on it during Black Friday last year. Plus I was impressed with it on build #1. I said why not. I really wanted to go with a DD upper but everyone was sold out. I think I picked up the Vltor for $160 or so.

Well she runs! I was scared that the middy was going to choke using the A5 buffer setup as some reported on this forum. I haven't ran into any problems to date.

Total round count through the pipe: 309. Would have been 310 but I had to toss a round because of the jam I had.
The FTFs were both mag related. Once it was cleared, it ran like a champ again. Culprit mags were a super old Colt 20 rounder (which has not been maintained) and a new "Noveske" marked standard aluminum mag. That mag is just plain crap. The round couldn't get stripped off fast enough before the bolt slammed shut. It caught the round between the feed ramp and bolt. I had several E-Mags with me and did not encounter any problems, obviously.

ETA: Two malfunctions total in 310 rounds. 309 were actually fired. As of 4-17-11 I put another 113 rounds through the rifle for a total of 422. By the end of Thurs (4-21-11) I should have another approx 500 rounds through it.

I have fired the following rounds successfully. All cycled and held back on empty.

    Brown Bear
    Wolf Classic
    Federal Value
    PRVI "M193"

My irons and RDS are zero'd in at 50. I'm well within a 3" diamond at 100 yards with both as well.

    50 yards (PRVI 55gr FMJ BT "M193")
    Upper left: RDS
    Center: Irons
    Upper right: Irons

    Update:

So I just got through with my 4 day dept patrol carbine course. I have a little over 900 flawless rounds through her now. There were no issues at all with this setup. I'm super pleased with how everything worked out.
Project #3 is coming up. It's going to be a BCM upper and lower deal.

Solid looking duty weapon. Glad to hear she is running like a champ.

I can picture in my mind a world without war, a world without hate and I picture us invading that world because they would never expect it.
