I'm sure he could see the humor in it.

3rd MarDiv Schools was teaching a similar method in the mid 80's. The thumb went over the top of the handguard, the index finger was aligned with the barrel with the tip of the finger at the end of the handguard. They called it 'point shooting' or something along those lines. It was supposed to be used when you were doing the old frontal assault/fireteam rushes when a target popped up unexpectedly.

The idea was that the shooter only had to point his index finger at the target and he could effectively supress the target until he could aim properly of finish the ole...I'm up, I'm seen, I'm down.

We used it against some reactive targets on Tinian, the technique works pretty good for regular infantrymen. Marines got on target quicker with less rounds used. Interesting Catch 22, with the non pointing method, there was very little rounds to redistribute during consolidation. With the point method we had a buttload more rounds at consolidation and as with all things military.....we had to have a mad minute because we had to expend all the rounds.......once you break them out of the ammo cans, ya had to expend them.

I don't think so. SOTG (USMC) was teaching the same principle (or close to it) in 1988 (maybe earlier).

    It's really not that new.

(ah...I see Smuckatelli beat me to it. Anyway, apparently it was more widespread in the Marines than I knew).
