Mountain House - ever read the label?

I was looking a the Mountain House web site. When reading the ingredients label for the 20 oz pack of beef stew, I was shocked.

The calories per 10 oz serving was only 250, but the sodium content for the same serving was 1080 milligrams.

Is anyone else concerned about the low calorie count vs. the high sodium content?

The # 10 cans are almost impossible to find. I was going to start getting some of the 20 oz packages, until I saw this.

Is there any other freeze dried foods with higher calorie counts and lower sodium counts out there?

I handle both Mountain House and Wise Foods... it seems that all long storage life foods of this type are high in salt.

I always give people the nutritional info sheets and tell them to read them, think about the numbers and make a decision based on what they see.
Please let me know if I have offended you...

I was aware of the low calories in Mtn House. I mainly stock piled some cans for a change is taste. Beef Stew or scrambled eggs will taste wonderful after having rice & beans every day.

    This.

MH is factored into my preps solely for variety's sake. Wise isn't too bad, albeit I've only had their breakfast stuff.

High sodium is just a fact of life for long-tern food storage. Any idea how much soduim was in salted pork?

High calorie foods tend to be high in fats, which don't store well.

If you think the sodium in MH is high, look at the cholesterol count on their egg breakfasts.

No kidding! I bought a few of those before just to see what Freeze Dried Eggs and Bacon would be like. Not bad, but it's like 130% of a daily cholesterol recommendation or something.

    Thanks for the input guys.

My goal is two weeks worth of MRE's, two weeks worth of Mt. House 2 serving packages, three months of canned foods, and then three months worth of long term storage foods (beans, rice, ect.).

When this is set up, I plan on increasing everything across the board each month.

My thinking was the MRE's and MT. House individual packages would be used at first, when things were unstable. Some of these would also be available should I need to bug out/relocate.

I would like to increase things to the point I have 1 month of MRE's and MT. House packages, and a year of long term foods stored and rotated through usage. If the # 10 cans ever become available again, I would like to add maybe 6 months worth of that, in addition to the long term food storage.

I was concerned about eating Mt. House exclusively for a couple of weeks, and the effect of the high salt and low calories.

Give me a call when you get a chance, either that or I'll call you, and of course I'll forget this thread when I do, but I had no idea you had MH and Wise. Here I am trying to figure out who to order through.....

I need to figure Oral IV into a few things as well.

For bugging in, I plan to use my canned goods mainly at first since they have the shortest shelf life. I'll be mixing in other food stock in for a variety of diet, but I will be watching the expiration dates on the cans. I have a 2 month supply of cans, but by using with the other longer-term food, I hope it will last 6-12 months.

I got some of these can organisers so my old cans are always up front & get rotated out:

ETA: another nice thing about the organiser, it lets you easily see what types of cans need restocking. (wife keeps raiding the green beans).

Sounds like I have the same stored foods as many of you. MRE's, Mountain House, etc.
I'm a salt-a-holic so the high sodium content doesn't bother me. "Survival Experts" that I'm familiar with say such things as....
"Without sodium, which the body cannot manufacture, the body would be unable to transport nutrients or oxygen, transmit nerve impulses, or move muscles, including the heart" .. Plus you need to sweat.
Seems like the high sodium would require higher consumption of water too though?
Plus you need to re-hydrate the MH, but I'd rather have any of these choices than no food at all.
