Fix up the Beretta or buy something else?

I have a US made Beretta 92FS. I bought it used and its a little beat up but still runs great. I currently use it for my carry. I would like to have a weapon with night sites, rail attachment, and a threaded barrel. I have found all of these items for the Beretta for around $450.

My question is, is it worth putting the money into this weapon, or should I just use that money towards the purchase of a new weapon that already has these features, say an M&P or Glock.

    Any unbiased opinions?

I wouldn't add most of those gadgets on the gun. If the barrel is worn, replace it. Be sure to replace the locking block. Keep the gun as a practice gun.

Leave the goofy add on rail off and save the money on the night sights. Instead, find a good used Vertec or Elite 1A or the new 92A1. They come with integral light rail and dove tail front sight, the also come with optional night sights.

Do you shoot with your 92FS a lot? I agree with Sam that you should keep it as your practice weapon and that you buy a 92A1. It has a rail, and the sights can easily be removed unlike the standard 92FS front sight. Parts commonality and your manual of arms between the two weapons will be mostly the same. That being said, it's a big gun especially for carry. You could go to a Glock, M&P, etc. but you will be learning a new weapon that functions differently than what you are used to. You'll need to decide what's best for your needs.

Nothing wrong with a 92. Its a big gun, but it has the advantage of being paid for.

Take the money you'd spend on a new pistol and do 1 of 2 things:

    1)Buy ammo

    or

    2)Get training.

If you have personal reasons for staying with Beretta then tune yours up, use it for training, and pick a newer model up with the features you want.

If you are not married to the idea of carrying a Beretta then I would look at other platforms as there are others out there with more advantages IMO.

I've carried an M9 as a security guard for 5 years and do well at our 6-month quals despite not owning one and not being able to practice with my duty gun ever. I think it fits my hand well and last week when I found a used 92G (decock only) I really wanted it even though I've gotten away from DA pistols. but they wanted more than $500 for a used beretta so I said no thanks.

    I'd just spend the extra $100 for a 92A1.

I think the bigger question is whether or not you want to transition to another type of handgun. The M&P and Glock will both feel and operate differenlty from what you have been shooting. If you are used to and like the way your Beretta handles then you should probably go with the 92A1 as others have suggested. If you have some friends with other handgun models that you can try out, then that would be a good test to see if you'd prefer a change in handgun.

If you like Beretta, stick with it.

Forget the rail though, that's lame.
