Ok. Good advice. Im looking into getting a Tops Rangers Edge as a tactical knife. Its has a 5.25" double sided blade with an overall length of 10.5". I think I will like this knife. Its got good blade thickness while retaining a thin profile. A good amount of length for the handle too. I could make a sweet thin sheath for this knife so I can either mount it to my sidearm leg holster or tuck it behind my M4 mags of the my chest rig.

    This is it.

They have another knife im looking at too. Id get it maybe as a survival knife.

    Either the Steel Eagle 105:

    Or the Steel Eagle 107D:

The 105 would probably be enough but the 107D is pretty sweet

Lord have mercy,... I just recieved my Ka-Bar Tanto blade and holy hell its huge! I saw the dimensions online and I guess it just didnt click in my head until I saw it in person. The overall length is like 12"!!! Even longer when sheathed! I just dont know how to carry something like this. I dont think I will use this knife because its just to big. But I researched other knives and it seems that maybe 9 - 11" is about average fro a good combat/ survival knife. .........

I knew it!! As soon as I saw the title I thought "bet he got that Ka-bar Tanto...
In all fairness that caught my eye too- for some reason I have developed a fetish for tanto-profile blades....
But THAT thing isn't a "knife"- it a short sword!! I'm SO glad I found one to handle before I made any further decisions....

    Anyway-
I agree on the small classic/usmc Ka-bar- to small. Although the small Tanto actually felt ok to me, even with my ape hands. Go figure.
Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but don't knives made from high carbon steel have a tendency to rust, if not cared for properly?
If the overall plan for this is as a survival knife, would this maybe not be the greatest idea? Or am I just missing something?

Well like a lot of people of people I was looking for one universal blade. One blade for everything. That's just not going to happen. Right now I'm looking for a shtf tactical blade. Small thin light double edged. After that ill get a survival knife. Agreed,... that ka-bar tanto was indeed a short sword. I could easily take somesones hand with that thing. Way to big. The short versions are ridiculous too. I like high carbon blades because they are real strong and very easy to sharpen. They rust but I take good care of my stuff.

My question is how do you carry somethng like this? I dont mean while camping. I mean with gear on like a chest rig etc. How do soldiers carry their knives? I tried to figure out how I would or could possibly mount this knife on me and i just dont think its possible. I need a much smaller knife. I am a small guy too. 5'7 @ 160lbs.

Any tips and pics would be great. Thanks. Anyone want a Ka-Bar Tanto? Brand new I'll give it away for $40. Just use it to cut some cardboard thats all.
I have used this vendor before. I have one of their sheaths for my Safariland 6004. It holds an Al Mar BU-1. As you can see, larger knives are also accommodated. I can not recommend this firm highly enough.

Both. Steel Eagle has about a 7" blade at 1/4" thick. The Rangers Edge is about 5" at about 3/16" thick.

Here's a video I made of myself cutting through a 5" log with the Steel Eagle.

Also,... the other day I decided to watch the movie Predators so I did. About 10 minutes into the movie I noticed the big ass blade the main character is wearing right on the front of his vest. I thought wow thats a nice looking handle. I bet the blade is just as nice. As Im watching I noticed the handle is really starting to look very similar to my Steel Eagle's handle. So I kept watching,... sure enough, it is a Steel Eagle! Its the Steel Eagle 107C. The very same knife I have. Its called the Hunters Blade.

I have a Cold Steel SRK that I have beat the shit out of. For $65 you can't beat it IMO. I think it's just about the right size. The only time I might need a bigger blade,>6, inches is when i'm doing some serious chopping or trying to baton through a massive log.
