You should quantify your experience using an EOTech. I've used them for 12K rounds and Aimpoints for just over 15K. The EOTechs I've owned, 512, 551, 552 would change POI if they got hot. Batteries never lasted more than a few hundred hours. The 551 was the worst, it got to the point that after about 40hrs it would start to give the bright/dim indicator that the batteries were going when turned on. The would also not hold a good zero if removed, LaRue mounts fix this problem but the Aimpoint (any of them) is a better optic by light years.

How bad is the POI shift?

I wonder if most eotech users don't realize this because generally when you're shooting enough volume to get a gun hot, you don't slow down and check your zero.

2" at 50yds on average. You would really notice it if you sighted it in on a cool day. Then had the rifle in your hot trunk and went and shot it, then it might be 3" or more off. Never has happened with an Aimpoint for me. Depending on skill level some people might not notice.

I have both and prefer the Aimpoint. Needless to say Eotech is still a fine optic.

    Pat's post

Well, Pat's post on page 2 was the proverbial straw that broke the camel's back for me. Ditched my tan 553(never did use it, annoying right cant)yesterday in favor of an M4.(no cant.) Local fun shop was more than accommodating and allowed me to simply exchange and pay the difference in LE price.(pays to be a cash customer)No more worrying about forgetting to turn it on, when my contact springs will fail, or when my batteries will prematurely crap out. Only down side was the temporary trouble I got into with the wife over the price difference.

Thanks a lot Pat, my wife thinks you're a bad influence on our bank account. She doesn't even know yet I'll be ordering a Larue mount next month for it as well. Once again, all your fault.

Tommy- it's true- i am a Bad Boy. Please tell your wife that it is all my fault, and not to take it out on you
Advise her that the money you will save in buying batteries will make up for the price difference in the long term.

Youll like the M4. If you don't need the Kill Flash, ditch it. It makes using the iron sights problamatic.

    Enjoy the sight!

Is that true of all the Aimpoints or is it unique to the M4?

I have to say, of all my optics, my Aimpoint M4 is my favorite.

And the dot sure seems better defined. I did some long range stuff with it that I still don't believe. We are talking hitting steel gongs at 300 and 400 yards and a steel deer target at 500 yards with repeatability on a calm day.

The dot is so well-defined, you can use its diameter as a measure of hold-over.

I cannot do that with any other electronic sight.

Gotm4, did your POI drift problems occur with the newer "F" models?

If the Eotech is on a Larue mount on the receiver of an M4 carbine, how hot could it really get?

IIRC both my 551 and 552 were ver. E. The 551 was run on a LaRue EOTech mount on LaRue rail on a 11.5" barrel with a KX3. I could get it hot enough that shooting it without gloves would cause burns very quickly (even with gloves it would get uncomfortable). How hot is that? Being a former firefighter I'd say somewhere above 300F degrees.

It actually shifted at my Blackwater Carbine Operators class but not enough that I couldn't hit their steel (roughly 9x12" steel plates at 100yds).

I don't know what the 512 is thats on my wifes SBR on a RRA Dominator 2 mount (on the receiver) where it's not going to get very hot.
