I know it is not for measuring dimensions. I am trying to raise awareness that money spent on MPI could be better spent on checking more dimensions. More is better. Since no one checks 100% of dimensions, more is possible for any given QC budget if you don't do MPI.
So keep the HPT but ditch the MPI?
Well, it is not clear that HPT is useful either. We check headspace after HPT to see if it changes. It never does though. We do HPT because we have a company policy to do it. We don't have engineering evidence that it is useful for proven designs. Really guns stopped failing proof tests about 60 years ago.
MPI will not find fissures and inclusions in the material?
Magnetic particle inspection (MPI) is a non-destructive testing (NDT) process for detecting surface and subsurface discontinuities in ferroelectric materials such as iron, nickel, cobalt, and some of their alloys.

Ok, reading through this thread I gather that rsilvers thinks that the money used to MPI bolts would be better used by expanding the dimensional testing. Everyone else doesn't want to give up MPI testing because even if it rarely rejects properly made bolts, they feel it is worth it when you're betting your life on this part.
My question would be, why not expand the dimensional testing to the point that it catches the majority of out of spec parts, keep the MPI testing, and pass the cost on to the consumer?
I assume that most of the people that demand MPI are the type that would not mind spending 20-30$ for that bit of security. The people who are looking for a bargain in my experience are not the ones demanding the MPI or anything else for that matter. Sales won't be lost on them by raising the cost, they will keep on buying the same shit anyway.
KAC doesn't HPT/MPI every bolt, correct? No one seems to complain about HPT/MPI when it involves KAC and Hk.

Probably a stupid question, but does not the TDP specify those items?
That may be the case. However there is no way to guarantee that. Company X gets their parts from company A who gets the raw material from company M. There is always the possibility of a hiccup along the way some where in that process. MPI will find out if the flaws are in there some where. Again, this is something you are betting your life on.
Now batch testing? That could work in this instance. But like I said, if the cost of individual HPT and MPI testing is incremental compared to the cost for the rest of the weapon, why not do it? Make that a corner stone of your marketing campaign. Consumer will obviously pay more for that quality assurance.
