When I was in Iraq from 07-09 we had 500 BM carbines. Not one carrier key was staked until I started the process. Numerous keys were loose, many did not have the required torque applied and some of them worked loose when they were being shot at the range. The weapons were purchased new in 2004 if I recall correctly.

So though it took a while for it to happen, it did happen. The question you have to ask is why such a simple process like this ignored and why isn't it done? I am still waiting for some intelligent response to this question.

It is sad that's Company would choose to cut corners on such an important step to save a few bucks. Especially with guns being used in a combat area.

The spec to know if a key is staked correcty is to take a same number of carriers and test the screw removal torque. Do it to 10 carriers from each company and report the average and standard deviation.

Our department issues BM's (unfortunately) to SERT--I checked two bcg's for laughs...

Neither were staked for crap. One started getting loose.

For those that persist in believing that parts are parts and that staking isn't a necessity, take a look at these two photos. Went whooting today with markm and a couple of other guys and one of them had a DTI upper and lower with an Armalite semi-BCG and DPMS buffer.

His weapon began short stroking and after I took it apart and examined the BCG I discovered that both screws had worked loose and it was losing gas. In addition the spring pin on the buffer worked loose as well.

In the BCG pic you will only see one raised screw. That's because I tightened the other in order to show how much they backed out.

    .

    IG,
What is the worst damage you've seen with a loose Gas Key?
Seems like it could wreak havoc if it came loose and bound up above the Carrier or misalign with the Gas Tube and damaged it??

His key was a little chewed up, but not bad because it was caught early. But generally you are looking at chewing up the gas tube and key.

Not to mention that the weapon will stop working and probably at the wrong time.

How are buffers staked? Or how do I prevent the roll pin from popping out like that?
