are you figuring out that blades are a highly personal thing and everyone has a slightly different style?

like someone else said, you dont have to spend $200 to get a good blade. And dont worry too much about the steel either as you will still get good service from even a 440 stainless IME.

I have carried this knife for about 2 years, and it is my favorite folder I have ever carried. Great steel, good size, comfortable, doesn't scream "I AM AS TACTICAL AS EFFING POSSIBLE!"
I have carried a lot of knives, anmd wile I can't say it's the best folder ever, it is the best I have personally used.

The Fallkniven F1 is a great fixed blade utility knife.

Tough as a badger's boner, sized right for real cutting purposes without being too big to mount on a vest.

The Fallkniven S1 is also good, with a larger blade for heavier work, but still with a good cutting profile.

There are a lot of knives out there, but only a few that are actually made to do work.
Once again, I am not saying that these knives are the best, but rather that they are ones that have performed to my expectation under actual operational conditions, that I paid for out of my own pocket.
Hey, i forget, what ever happened to your SOCFK and your Nimravus?

Look Spyderco Delica and Endura with Emerson's opening feature. Instead of the Ontario check out EESE-5.

    Heh.
I got sick of the SOCFK only locking the blade 90% of the time and being too thick for anything other than hacking MREs open and traded it to a guy working a knife shop in SoCal a few years ago. I think I traded it for a Spyderco Military.

I like the Nimravus, but the sheath always gave me heartburn, and instead of buying another one I stopped carrying it and wound up picking up other knives when I was without a fixed blade for whatever reason.

I constantly come accross knives in my gear boxes with a little suprised, "Damn, I fogot I had one of those!"

Have you looked at any Emersons for everyday carry I love mine. If you do check out New Graham knifes they seem to have the best priced Emersons.

I'm not as knife knowledgeable as many here but I have and do own several. For a working folder I carry a Spyderco Delica, for a defensive folder I carry a Benchmade. The Benchmade is an older design but I absolutley love it, I think it may have been called the Dark Star?.

For a fixed blade I have two favorites; the ESEE (Rat), I have the RC4. And the Cold Steel SRK. I'd probably give the edge (no pun intended) to the SRK.

I don't know much about black rifles (though I own one) but I have been into knives for a LONG time.

If it were my money (and its not) I would buy a:

Benchmade 520 or a 940... you'll be right around your budget +/- where you buy. I'd recommend knifeworks.com

Spyderco Para would be a distant third.

    For a fixed blade.

The Rat series of knives is outstanding. If you are going to be cleaning some game... I prefer BM's Nimravus Cub in 154cm over the 1095 of most other fixed blades.

    My most used knives are:

Benchmade - 530 - Thin for office carry inside the waist band of your trousers. Very light.
Benchmade - Griptillian - I've seen this knife described as the "Glock" of knives... Its true. Two sizes to choose from, and super reliable.

Erickson Mora- Proof that you don't need to spend a lot on a knife to get quality. (buy two or three of them in carbon steel and stash them in your toolbox, tackle box, BOB...etc.)

EESE, Falkniven, Bark River, or Blind Horse - buy one. Smaller is usually better with fixed blade knive. Trust me, it took years for me to admit it. Buy one that's sub 5". You will never want to part with it. It'll do all you ask of it. Again, you don't have to spend a mint. $100-150 will get you a high quality knife that will outlast you.

For folders on a budget look for a used not abused Emerson. CQC-7 is a great everyday carry. Wave feature is super useful.

I got my knife situation squared away a year or so ago. I am using a fixed blade ESEE Rat 3 and my folder ended up being a Gerber 06 Automatic. I am very happy with both knives.
The ESEE is really great because of the law enforcement discount and the warranty. The 06 Automatic is very stout.
