Is this his first 1911? It might be a better option to buy a production 1911 from a reputable manufacturer, like Colt, rather than buying a semi-custom gun.
It's a gift for him to use as he wishes. If he can deploy with it, which I doubt, I want to know he's got an accurate and reliable gun. If not, i don’t want him using the gun we bought him as an excuse when I out shoot him on the range.

This is not his first 1911. However it will be his first custom 1911.

I have a Springfield armory operator that came from the factory with an improperly tuned extractor and, I didn't notice it at first but the front sight was poorly installed and bent as a result. SA fixed it right up and paid shipping both ways without any fuss. after a little research I found that bad extractor adjustment from SA is not uncommon dating back to at least 2000 on some of the posts I saw. it seems their customer service and repair shop is much better than their quality control. also it's never been an issue but the angle of the ejector is not what many in the know have said is ideal. but mine is pretty consistent with putting them right and slightly behind.

knowing what I know now I would not have bought my operator, but I have it and it's fixed and I'm happy with it. my story is just proof that you need to run about 500 or more through a gun to "prove" it before you start trusting your life to it.

    2. Go look at as many different guns as you can in that price range; especially those from Ed Brown, Springfield Armory and Wilson Combat.

    3. Recognize that, because they are rather expensive, most 1911 owners will have a favorite manufacturer, which will normally correspond to whatever model they bought/own.

    4. (See #3 above.) This means that most owners won't really be qualified to offer insights -- beyond the anecdotal -- into brands other than the one they chose, simply because of limited experience and exposure.

What follows is merely my opinion:

    5. It is extremely difficult to beat Wilson Combat in a $2k class gun, both because of the pistol you'll get for the money, and the legendary support you will continue to enjoy after the sale.

    6. The basic CQB from Wilson's shoots better than a 95th-percentile shooter pretty much any day of the week, and good deals on used ones can often be found with a bit of patience. This model gets my vote for price : performance ratio; especially in a lightly-used example. It has everything that you need, and nothing that you don't.

Disclaimer: I am a moderator on the Wilson Combat board at 1911Forum; however, there is a reason for this -- and I didn't accept the role until I had several years of WC ownership (various models) under my belt. Wilson's is the benchmark gun in this class.

This question is asked often. In regards to Army Chief's answer, Points 3 and 4 are well thought out and are the absolute truth. One would do well to consider his advice. I also think AC's point #5 is spot on as well.

Wilson is making great 1911s right now. Wilson frames are without a doubt my favorite 1911 frame at the moment.

I'll dogpile onto the Wilson Combat recommendation, for the exact reasons already stated.

I've owned and shot multiple different models from Nighthawk, Ed Brown, Les Baer and Wilson Combat. In the end, I kept the Wilson's.

They are all excellent guns, and each possibly have individual merits, but Wilson's service after the sale is what made me make the decision to stick with them now and in the future.

    Wilson
    Nighthawk
    Brown

All very good. Wilson and Nighthawk will give the best customer service. He will love that gun and keep it a lifetime, and probably his boys will too. Awesome thought!

HK 45. Just kidding! AC is right. Wilson Combat. Although, I would say that a Good Colt XSE or Rail Gun with night sights is pretty nice.
If you aren't armed when you take a dump in your own home then your opinion on what is a practical daily carry weapon isn't interesting to me.

I like the XSE myself, my next 1911 will be an XSE blackened Rail Gun. I already have the XSE LW Commander and love it, but want a full-size with steel frame as a shooter since the LW Commander was a wedding gift. I like the XSE because for the money I don't think you can beat Colt quality when you consider the other players in the price range, such as Kimber and Springfield and I think the Colt beats them. But then if it isn't a Colt it's just a copy right?

I have always wanted a high-end semi-custom 1911 but I never really looked at the Wilson brand. After seeing so much recommendation in this thread I took a look at their site and their line up is impressive. When I saw the Contemporary Classic Centennial my jaw dropped! I would sell half my guns for one! I'm not too knowledgeable on 1911s so don't take any advice from me!

I think the OP will find that the right Wilson model will be a great investment.
