No disrespect here, but now we're recommending $3,400+ pistols, based almost entirely upon the manufacturer's own marketing? C&S is a fine operation, but I think this particular 1911 falls a bit outside of the scope of the OP's intentions.

I've owned, fired and/or evaluated most of the pistols in the "semi-production" class, and offered a recommendation. Some have agreed. Others have served up recommendations of their own. However you may care to look at it, we seem to have arrived at the predicted destination wherein everyone highlights their particular favorite 1911 (read: whatever they happen to own or wish they owned), and we're no longer really on-point. Even taking into account that the OP was fairly vague -- and perhaps even a bit overly optimistic -- about his purposes and constraints involved with the project, there is plenty here to draw from.

I am usually careful not to take the last word in a discussion, but to be perfectly candid, I don't see much point in allowing this one to flop around on the dock for another two pages. Unless the opening constraints can be restated with a bit of renewed clarity, or someone with first-hand experience has a late-breaking epiphany regarding an as-yet-unmentioned 1911, the thread is destined for closure in relatively short order.

Really? Do you have one? If not, what is your personal experience with these?

The Nighthawk that the OP was talking about is around $2,899. I offered, based on my personal experience, something the OP may want to consider. Yes the Trident is a few hundred dollars more than the Nighthawk. Is it really that much more? If you feel the Fail Zero finish is not worth it, C&S does offer it in Parkerized version for less than the Nighthawk.

There is nothing wrong with Wilson's or Ed Brown's for that matter. However, someone already mention them. I gave my opinion based on the wide berth and the price range (no cap) that the OP gave me when he asked an open question.

I do not currently own one. I have shot it and spoke with both Bill Laughridge & the "Operator" who helped design it. The one I had shot had a couple thousand rounds through it (no lube). It shot extremely well. Fit and finish was very well done and very well thought out for a hard use 1911 fighting pistol.

It will be my next 1911 purchase and yes, I can afford it. BTW, I have never shot a Nighthawk. I have taken one apart and was not impressed with the fit and finish of the gun for that price range.

I own a few Colts and the rest are in the Wilson/Brown range of 1911's.

as for the Colts, that's the problem with custom shop units. there's little consistency from pistol to pistol, with the ones I've handled. As I may have mentioned before I've got a custom shop Colt sitting in a drawer because it's too gaudy, and poorly fitted to be seen by others. maybe one day it'll get to a shop and redone. for now, i'm doing the world a service by keeping it hidden

As a former owner of 2 SA Pro's and a Baer TRS I 'd lean towards No. While both are excellent examples of hard fit or tight 1911's that work even when dirty the fact that you do need a bushing wrench (at least for the first 10,000 rounds or so) to field strip makes them less than ideal for combat environs. For police (FBI SWAT) or the civilian realm its really not an issue.

Before you finalize your decision, I'd urge you to look at the Dan Wesson Valor. It's not a rail gun, but one of the best semi-custom production guns on the market. At $1,500, the Valor is hard to beat. Fit is tight. Accuracy is better then what I'm capable of. Reliability has been flawless since I purchased mine over a year ago.

Not to take anything away from the big namers, but higher priced doesn't necessarily mean better. It just means people are willing to pay a higher price. Exclusivity is a markerting ploy. MOFWIW.

Why is he limited to a 1911?

At that price wouldn't the SA TRP be an option.
