Great questions Ironman. I asked for everybodys opinions, and what they used, to try to narrow down my options. When I first saw the tennis racket case, I was pretty exstatic, then I thought of the same dilemna you posed. I dont play tennis.
I do play guitar, but all those soft cases are just too big for my SBR.
I have tossed around the ideal of the duffel bag, but most require me to break my rifle down. I dont want that.
Im thinking about contacting John Willis, at SOE Tactical, and having him build something up for me.

    1) What application are you guys using this bag for? For what do you need a discrete bag?

    2) If the answer to number 1 is what I think it is, then are you prepared to play the part or at least get by with it?...read on...

For me, the reason I would want a discrete bag is to be able to carry it places that I generally would not be able to such as an office at work (if you own your own business)...or from your car to your apartment, where there is a strong possibility that you would come into contact with a person that you may or may not know who may strike up a conversation about your tennis or guitar bag thinking that you actually play....

To me, the most discrete is a duffle bag setup (especially if you workout...and it helps to look the part), whether you make your own dedicated discrete SBR duffle bag or you buy something like the Emdom-MM TNT Bag. Nobody would ever question a duffle bag because they are "usually" filled with sweaty clothes and gym gear.

So this has led me to my question...are you guys who use these "other" bags prepared to look and play the part if you have to?

If you are, then great, drive on....but if you carry a conversation with a guy about your "guitar" that you have in your case, there is always the chance that he will ask politely to see it because he is a guitar enthusiast...now what? How do you politely decline without arousing any suspicion, thus negating the purpose of the "discrete" bag?

I know from personal experience that nobody will EVER ask to see what's in a duffle bag...at least I've NEVER been asked, and I've carried around a gym/duffle bag for a long long time....

    Agree? Disagree?

I use the tennis bag merely for the purpose of transport to and fro the house to my vehicle that I park outside. I live in a tight little neighborhood full of busy bodies who like to keep an eye on you but never say anything to you. The days of friendly neighbors is a thing of the past arround here, it seems that now days folks want to just be left alone is my experience. My neighbors don't know, or care, if I play tennis. They probably don't even know what Head is. One thing is for sure though, it doesn't look like a gun case and therefore doesnt raise any eyebrows. If it was a guitar case I have one neighbor who would probably be interested and want to check it out, but nobody gives a damn about tennis. If they do happen to ask I'll just tell em that is just an old raquet, no big deal. Plus, as mentioned earlier, hopefully a crook is going to be more interested in stealing a high dollar guitar to pawn rather than a basically worthless tennis raquet. Your points about the duffel bag are spot on, but I think I'd have to break down the gun for it to not look funny in a duffel bag. The tennis bag is a perfect fit assembled with a 30 round mag. Thats why It peaked my intrest.

Are there any hard sided tennis racket cases for use with airline travel? I like that with pistol cases it looks more like a drill (hey they both make holes, right?) or some other small equipment not looking like a firearm.

    BSmith and Matt:

I def understand about wanting to keep the rifle assymbled. I'm thinking the same thing in that regard, but even with a 10.5" SBR that would be a really long, awkward duffle bag to carry around. But realistically, this isn't going to be a quick response type of weapon that you would need in a defensive situation...that's what your CCW is for.

Carrying your rifle, even fully assymbled, in a bag would be like conceal carrying your handgun in a backpack...there might be a few applications for it, but mostly when its not readily available due to it being behind a zipper, it just becomes cargo.

BSmith, let us know what the guy at SOE comes up with...if you are looking the duffle bag route and decide that breaking the rifle down isn't a big deal, then look at this bag

Like many others here I use the Blue Force Gear bag. Mine is in red and being a hoosier I am getting an IU patch for it.

The bag holds my 11.5 inch SBR with a 20 round mag loaded. I also have a 3 slot holder mounted int he pack that holds two 30 round mags and my Can.

I e-mailed John at SOE today, with a list of wants, and dont wants, for a SBR case. When he gets back to me, ill pass on what info he gives me.

Get a hard side Pelican case big enough for the guns, but small enough to put inside another suitcase. The best camo is not being seen, or not standing out from the other bags. While guns have a certian allure for some people the alternative cases also can focus peoples attention. Tools, cameras, video equipement, and sporting goods can all be sold quickly for cash.

I have a 5.11 Viking Tactics bag that holds two long guns, unfortunately when I go out for drills it's like taking luggage with me. I was hoping to find a discreet bag for one 16" rifle that would also be discreet. My neighborhood is full of morons and it's a matter of time before they see me lugging around this giant assault bag to & from my car.

Would the tennis racket case work on a 16"?

Prob No. Here's one I used w/ multiple SBR's as it has a divider. A 10.0/10/5" is pictured.
