Clean freaks hate me - especially when it came to my Colt AR-15. It spent much time eating ammo and little time in the bathtub. Rudimentary cleaning was the norm - a total scrub was a rare gift - the gun just ran and still does. Gave the pipe cleaners everyone told me I needed to have when I bought it to my daughter for a school project... I have the same methodology with my SOCOM-16/Troy MCS - it gets the basics more often than not and runs like a top.....I hope my new AR is the same way.

I'm a clean every time it's shot type guy too. It's just how I was taught.

My question to those who clean only rarely, you say you have no problems with function, are there any negative effects inside the BBL from prolonged periods between cleanings??

I have Glock pistols and Colt carbines...no need to clean; ever.

my usual range trip is 100 rounds.

after that i take apart the bolt, wipe off the carbon and lube it with CLP. generally wipe out the inside of teh receiver as well.

every 400 or so i clean the barrel, chamber, lugs etc. really get it clean.

i've heard that over-cleaning barrels will shorten their lifespan a lot quicker than shooting them.

i use an Otis AR15/M16 cleaning kit btw.

After shooting I'll spend no more then a 15-30 minutes doing a quick once over and oiling it generously.

Run a few patchs down the barrel and clean the bolt in a half assed manner then wipe down the exterior.

But once a yr if I havent shot something in my safe I still pull it out and give it a thurough cleaning.

I shot a total of 928 rounds between the last two cleanings. During then, I made sure that I kept the BCG lubed and I may have quickly run a boresnake or a couple of patches though the barrel.

But during that period, I actually experienced a malfunction. There was so much carbon build-up inside the BCG that the firing pin would not put enough of a dent onto the primers and caused a misfire. I just wiped down the face of the firing pin's "hat" (that's what I call it) and it ran fine after. I was using S&B ammo through most of those. YMMV.
