I clean My weapons everytime I use them.![]()
It's this type of mentality that goes against all common sense and paves the way for uneducated and badly misinformed new shooters.
Does common sense say run a bore brush 100 times down your barrel after every time you shoot. No. But performing SOME sort of maintenance stands to reason.
Naturally the old Marine, scrub it till the bluing comes off is not the proper way.
How much you clean is simply directly related to how much you fired the weapon. Maybe a full detail cleaning is needed, maybe just a wipedown and lubrication.
The only two completely wrong answers are ridiculously overcleaning, and not cleaning at all. Common sense dictates, but therein lies the problem.
Common sense truly is an uncommon virtue.
It's hard to believe that this topic has become a pissing match. If you shoot your guns they should be cleaned. Whether it be a simple patch down the barrel a few times, a quick wipe down or a detailed cleaning after firing a lot of rounds. In addition you should do a good once over to make sure everything is working right and nothing is coming loose, wearing excessively or whatever.
It really doesn't matter what type of weapon, be it an AR, Glock, H/K, Ak47 or your pocket knife. Those of us who served in the military had this beat into our heads along with checking your gear and accountability. Anything man made or mechanical can and will fail at some point. Why risk it further by not doing a simple check of your kit and a 15 minute brief cleaning?
Lets just say I don't completely agree with the 'weapons first", "if you shot it, clean it" mantra's. Or the priorities of work, as they were taught to me, years ago.

I'm going to bump this rather than start a new thread.....
As a former AR cleaning fanatic, I have to confess that I haven't cleaned an AR in over a year. As I get older and have less time on my hands, I just have realized it's not a priority. My Dewey one pice has cob webs on it. I just keep adding Frog Lube and shooting.![]()

I clean my ARs regularly but it's usually kind of a half assed cleaning where I mostly just wipe the crap off the BCG and out of the chamber, then reapply lube and reassemble.
I worry more about keeping mine lubed regularly. I inspect and clean them every few hundred rounds, but I have gone over 1,000 rounds without cleaning to no ill effect. THE MAIN THING IS TO KEEP UP WITH THE LUBE.
