I think the "shit where it eats" retardation stems from the monumentally over gassed barrels the the imbeciles who spec aftermarket barrels dumped on us for decades. I do believe in thorough cleaning of a defense weapon for the purpose of inspecting critical parts/pins, etc.

I clean my AR’s every couple hundred rounds, but lube prior to each range trip. My dedicated fighting gun is cleaned after every firing.

Google "Cleaning your ar-15 is pretty much a waste of time." He explains well why this is true. The Stoner action does not "poop where it eats." Rather, it is self-cleaning. Or google "Filthy 14."

This is true, of course, only of combustion products. Extrinsic dirt that gets in from the environment is a serious problem and calls for prompt and thorough cleaning. Sand in the chamber will stop any gun.

I don't clean my ARs. I just keep adding CLP. AR will run wet and dirty all day; it'll stop if it's dry and dirty.
That's why I don't get into the whizbang super-hard super-exotic BCG coatings, some of which are actually detrimental to their supposed enhancement, aka nickel boron. The only area on which carbon can not be simply wiped off on a BCG is the boat tail, and that carbon deposit area is self-limiting by it's nature so it's pretty much a non-issue.

If proper lubrication is kept the filth clears itself out.

I'd wager to inspect before and after cleaning. Some problems can show up when dirty then go unnoticed (but still present) if cleaned away.

I clean mine every time I’m done shooting. I guess it’s the grunt in me. But then again that’s why most of my AR’s are piston-driven: POFUSA, PWS, Adams arms and Sig Sauer MCX.

I see Dr. MarkM Frankenstein resurrected this. I remember the day I threw the cleaning Nazi shackles off and rejoiced in my new found freedom. The only ones that are religiously cleaned (aka wiped down and re-lubed) are the few that are at the ready for use. Other than that I shoot, wipe off and re-lube as necessary.

Try this guideline: Clean only what 10 minutes will allow.
