I clean the match guns after use, the blackpowder guns within a week or so, and the rest when I feel like it. If it won't work dirty, then I have no use for it. I will add lube to a dirty gun.

I clean mine when I feel guilty. I've gone well over 2000 rounds with just re-lubing, perhaps hosing the BCG of with GunScrubber.
The last time I cleaned my 6920 in depth, I had to give in, and resort to hot soapy water in the kitchen sink to get the majority of the accumulated carbon, lube, sand, etc out. And, I never did get it all.
Issued guns get cleaned in aparts washer at teh end of the range day, regardless of teh amount of rounds fired. Some guys put very little effort into it, I get cought up in it, and have to remind myself, I'm not in the Army anymore.
As far as cleaning guns for combat, I'll share this anecdote....
Years ago I had the Honor to know, shoot and talk to a certified hero, as in a book written about him, and a movie made. OK it was a Lifetime made for TV movie, but still, anyway.
One day he watched me scrub my 1911 clean, in a parts washer, it dried bone dry in the sun, I lubed it and assembled it. He then told me to go fire 50 rounds out of it. I looked at him like a dog looking at a ceiling fan, and asked why? He gave me three reason that I recall..
1 He didn't rust a clean weapon
2 You'll know it works
3 It'll be "set up to shoot more accurate"
The point is, you don't have to meticoulsy clean your weapon. Even an Army PM Monthly, 10 years ago, stated white glove 3 day cleaning was a waste, and did more harm then good.
We used to say, The leading cause of ware in military weapons, was cleaning.

Hey Matt, Bob!
Good to see guys of your caliberchime in!
We have known all of this for a long time. Good guns + good magazines + good ammo + generous lube = a functioning weapon.
Gee, what a surprise!
Hope you are both doing well, and stay off of that pistol site.

That's why I married a good lookin woman.. so I don't have to spend all my time in the basement cleaning guns.....I wish i had the available time to sit around and clean guns like some apparently do- but i would use that spare time for something else![]()
I totally agree with Pat on this,, if you want to clean your gun for 2 hrs every time you hit the range and fire 50 rds.. knock yourself out... but that is just pure stupid.... and I didn't just pick up an AR last month either...
I had 21 yrs of that mentality beat into me with Uncle Sugar... and now I know better.
I would rather have a better understanding of what's wearing and to be replacing it on a scheduled basis then just clean ..clean..clean and hope everything works...
Parts start wearing or you don't use enough lube and it makes no difference how clean your gun is.![]()
Just so we're trackin' I did not "chime" in to defend anybody.
Most of it had already been posted, and I gave my opinion.
BTW, it takes me 10-15 minutes just to get of the couch and take the gun outta the case.

As a "civie" who hits the range perhaps once a month, I too spend 15 to 20 minutes cleaning/lubing after each range session, whether I shot 20 rounds or 200. The Glock, AK, etc. all get the same. That said, if I used the the gun(s) nearly everyday as part of how I make a living like Pat does, I doubt they would get the same treatment.
I also believe there is a point to be made about incorrect cleaning technique that can indeed cause more harm than good in the long run, but that's a topic for a different thread.
Anyone feeling the need to gob off repeatedly to a respected SME on the weapons system will just get the boot.

The above bolt carrier group has more than 150rds fired during a range session in Iraq -- notice the lube is still on it.
I know that I can go thru my loadout and then some without any issue - so I did not clean it right away. All I did is add a little more lube. Later in the week when we had a down day - I was bored and stripped it down, cleaned it and re-lubed.
Unless you have had a down and dirty prolonged firefight, your M16FOW is not going to give you a major issue, if you dont clean it after as long as its lubed... I've seen them go 5k with just adding lube. Even 3500 suppressed from a Mk18 was nasty dirty - but it still worked.
The people that take 2 hours to strip their gun for a white glove inspection are the ones that make me shake my head.
I dont take anymore than 15min to clean a M16 series gun. I will spray it - and clean it - reassemble and voila. I found (given my bandwidth here) it took longer to upload the pictures I took of the bolt than cleaning my M4.
Now my 1911 -- thats another story...
Edit -- I chopped some of the non informative and otherwise argumentative stuff out of the post.
People are welcome to discuss and disagree on things - but keep it professional.

As others have said, I clean my guns everytime I come home from shooting them, AR, AK, pistols, etc.
The only exception is my IPSC competition gun (a Kimber Super Match) that might go two matches between cleanings. Even still, that is the gun that is both shot and cleaned the most.
Every couple of months or so, most everything in the safe gets at least wiped down with a silicone cloth if not totally relubed.
Hey Kevin,
I've got a lightly modded/custom Kimber that I've put over 1000 rounds thru with nothing more then adding lube. Only cleaned it to get ready for a LAV class. It was functioning fine.
So, I'm not so sure 1911's need to be meticoulsly clean either.
Just sayin
Bob
