If this was covered, I apologize for repeating it.
The advantage to both you and your Dad being on the same trust is that you both have access to all items bought through the one trust. If you have separate trusts, you only have legal access to the items in your own trust. If one "passes" the survivor still has access to all the items in the common trust.
My Son and I went through guntrustlawyer and I consider it $600 well spent for what is pretty much a bulletproof document. The guntrust documents are forwarded to an affiliated lawyer in your own state for review and revision, if required, to meet your states requirements.
One other note, while the NFA Branch does a review of a trust, they make no ruling as to it's conformance to your state's laws, unless something has changed very recently.
