Thanks for this post Will. This has given me some great ideas. My intake of diet soda and energy drinks is just excessive (actually beyond excessive) and I want to cut it out completely. I don't necessarily want to give up caffeine, but rather all of the other chemicals that go into these drinks. I believe I will try and make a healthier version on my own and transition to that.

Caffeine if used correctly (and sparingly) is wonderful stuff. I prefer the pill form, 200mg a pop and hundred pills to the bottle for about 6 bucks if memory serves. I limit myself to using it 2 times a week, sometimes 3 so it is still effective at fairly low doses. You can develop a tolerance to it amazingly quickly through daily use so moderation is the key unless you want to take massive amounts to get the same effect.
I've noticed that 400mg taken 30-40 minutes before a run can knock 20 or 30 seconds off my mile. It truly is one of the few cheap, legal things you can take that actually produce noticeable gains. I can usually knock out another rep or two over what I'd do not using it weight training as well. Better "sharpness" if that's what you could call it as well

Thanks Will!
No wonder I get heart palpitations after a Starbucks coffee.
This is great info.
Any comments or opinions on caffeine from green tea extracts?
I've cut back my caffeine intake quite a bit, mainly due to occasional bouts of insomnia. I use to take it daily via coffee. Now I drink maybe 2 cups of coffee a month and maybe 4 sodas containing caffeine a month.
The weird thing is that caffeine now seems to randomly have a reverse effect on me. Sometimes after drinking a cup of coffee I get drowsy. I think I've read somewhere that taking too much caffeine can cause this, but I'm talking about one cup of coffee, like 12 - 16 ounces.
Is this effect just in my head or did I screw up some metabolic process by drinking the stuff for years and then cutting back?
Just wondering if you've read anything about caffeine having the opposite effect on some people.
Thanks for all the info.
I love me some coffee.
Thanks for the writeup.
