why would you need constant on, on a weapon light?

Constant on is not the reason I want that tail cap. The reason I want that tail cap is because the standard G2 will discharge light if my support thumb bumps up on it or something pushes against it. I like the ability to turn off the light and keep it off because my standard G2L does not do this. If something pushes against it the light will discharge. I have not had the opportunity to test another G2L (80 lumen varient).

I don't know if thats normal but the z48 tail cap and G2X pro tail caps do not suffer from that issue. I've been meaning to ask surefire about this but it only happens when I screw in the tail cap almost all the way.

Is this normal for the G2L ?

Yes, this seems to be a fairly common problem with the G2 LED series of lights.

As far as the G2X tailcap is concerned, you could try putting some sort of spring rubber inside the coil to help it stay extended.

Thank you for the input. I plan on moving to a scout light or x300 for my rifle as soon as I save up the money to do that.

I will then retire the G2 and upgrade the head. In the mean time I will look for a replacement tail cap which will hopefully help alleviate this issue.

    OP,

    Contact Surefire's CS.

To upgrade you G2, I recomend the KX4 120 lumen LED head.

As you wrote a new tailcap/spring will only alleviate the issue and not solve it. A hard enough tap will still cause a power off/change.

The best "alleviation" would be a clickie tailcap with an extra strong spring, but you are talking $50++ for that. However, if you replace your current spring with a stronger one then it will be that much harder to activate the light in general.

I would say to just retire it to less important use and get a new light. I know it hurts, but SF did nobody in the tactical world any favors with the design of some of their new lights.

I contacted Surefire about the G2X PRO and they are sending me a new tail cap. The rep I spoke to was extremely helpful and patient. I forgot to ask him about the G2 tailcap issue but I figured after all the info you guys have given me this is normal behavior and as the poster above states I will be looking into a new light for my rifle in the near future as soon as funds permit it.

As for the G2 I plan on purchasing a new tail cap for it in the near future. I currently own a Z48 tail cap but it is too long for the way I like my light mounted.

I have an in-line VLTOR mount that works well for me but since I am going to switch over to a scout light or X300 eventually I really don't want to invest in a gear sector offset mount right now. If I had the gear sector mount I would be ok with the Z48 I think.

It sounds like you've got it figured out, but if your looking for a cheaper alternative to the Surefire Z57/Z58, you might want to consider the McClicky tailcap as an option. If nothing else, it's a fun little side-project.

a question about using the G2X as a weapon light - what mount does anyone use?

I have a G2 in a VLtor mount and it works well. the G2X appears to be a smaller diameter and won't work in this mount. I know I could use a layer of hockey tape around the barrel but that just not my way.

    any ideas?

One of my G2X Pro's does this with just the slightest bit of pressure.

Get a mount for a 6P. I've got the G2X Tactical in a gear sector offeset 6P mount.
