Got the suppressor bug, now I want one for my Rem 700

I have a Rem 700P in .308 with the heavy 26" barrel and HS Precision stock.

I just ordered an AAC Pilot and an AAC M4-2000 for some other guns I own...and now I want a decent suppressor for this one.

    I have two questions:

What would be a good barrel length to have? I can reliably engage sized targets at 800 yards all day with my current setup, I would like to be able to retain that ability. At the same time, a 26" barrel with an 8", 30 oz suppressor is ridiculous. Would I have issues chopping the barrel to 18"? 20"?

What is a good suppressor? I would prefer thread on as opposed to a quick mount. Is that an issue?
Why do the loudest do the least?

My favorite for all-around use is an 18" barrel.

A great option for your can is the AAC CYCLONE-
it's as quiet as anything out there, is reasonably sized and relatively lightweight for it's durability- Inconel blast baffle, stainless tube and baffles, fully-welded.

It is specifically-designed for long-range precision as well- your groups should tighten up from their unsuppressed size. It is thread-mount.

If you want to save even more weight and size at the expense of 3-4 dB, you can also look at the CYCLONE-K.

Yeah, the cyclones were what I was looking at. I'm not sure if 3dB (although I understand the dB scale) is worth the 3oz and over an inch in length. The price is pretty much the same. Decisions decisions...this suppressor will be $800 in tax stamps I've spent this week. I guess thats what happens when you live in a non-NFA friendly state for 4 years.

Will an 18" barrel with a suppressor will still be an 800 yard capable weapon?

As JMan's video shows, with good ammo, glass, and aim, you'll be gtg at 800.

Awesome. This may be a subject for a different thread but since its already began:

How do suppressors affect velocity? Surely an 18" barrel with an 8" suppressor will not have muzzle velocity equal to or less than a bare 18" muzzle correct? I currently don't have nor need a slanted base to achieve enough elevation adjustment out to 800, but depending how much velocity I lose I may need to upgrade that too.

I just sent an email to a major online distributor of suppressors in Oklahoma regarding his Cyclone (-K) pricing. It sucks to get so pumped up about something only to have the BATFE take 4 months to transfer it.

You will get SOME velocity boost from a can, but not too much. 25? 50 fps? I'm not sure.

The major will get back to you with a good deal I'm sure, but it may take until next week as he (and most manufacturers and a good number of dealers) are all around Memphis for the Silencer Shoot.

I appreciate the help Jason. I guess now I am going to start researching barrel lengths and associated velocities since I'm sold on the Cyclone series of cans. Its not a huge issue, but I don't want to have to buy a new optic or mount if possible. I just bought a new timney trigger, and with threading, the can, and the tax stamp its getting pricey already.

18" is a good length if you want to keep the overall length a little shorter. 308 cans are pretty long. It is probably too late in your case, but alot of guys buy the 308 can and use it on their 223's also. Would have saved you alot of cash.

The AAC Pilot was my first can, and is the most used suppressor that I own. Enjoy your new toys.

Since it sounded like the bullet left the BBL supersonic, at a typical speed of 2500 fps, that would suggest the bullet was seriously tumbling when it hit the plate and was probably going 100 fps or less.
