Guys look at it this way, if HK does start civilian sales of 416/417 it will be a long time coming and your going to need to take out a home equity line of credit or a loan because those babys are going to be expensive! Just wait for LMT to produce their own or buy Pof and save your self some of your hard earned cash!

Having no access to true milspec Ar15 makers, I really, really look forward to this one. You lucky Americans may have other options available to get high quality. Btw, this is the German BKA (Bundeskriminalamt) approval:

I would like to see a case telescope round in whatever caliber.
HK will be forced to fix their comercial distribution to sell the 416/417 and that could be the best news for HK customers. I just hope this Amercan funded technoogy will never be used against our soldiers.

I think there are several projects again being worked on with caseless ammunition,

By American funded technology, do you mean the HK416/417 family ? Since as far as I know, HK developed the original HK416 with their internal resources for a certain American military unit, at no obligation, financial or otherwise, from this unit.

Since then they have of course sold them to other western countries as well.

The 416 is based off a US design and input from that US group has helped the development. The G36 was based on the KE module from the OICW which was funded by US Gov't. The lightweight familily of weapons program is moving along and I saw AAI fire a casetelescope 5.56 beltfed codeveloped with ARES(Stoner's old company) at NDIA They have been working on case-telescope for years. I have yet to see data that makes me think caseless is ready. There is a flaw in caseless theory untill new colder burning propelents are developed.

Obviously the basic AR15 design was the basis for the HK416. From what I understood was that when that particular unit came to HK with their requests, HK at some point made a suggestion that they would develope the weapon, with their own funds and that the unit was under no obligation to buy it. And the rest is history..

My understanding was that HK did develope the G36 series also as a separate weapon family from the OICW program for general sales, for example to replace the then current Bundeswehr assault rifle, the G3.

Only seen a brief video of the AAI caseless LMG proto from the NDIA demo. I agree that if the technology would have been ready in the 80s, when HK for example was working on the G11, the caseless cartridges would have been in use for years now.

I think the Hk416 basis falls closer to some prototype Colts's I've seen at the Stoner Museum at KAC...

I think the OTB 416 was developed with US R&D funds

The G36 became a standalone version of the aborted KE part of the OICW - especially when a Unified Germany was needing a super cheap gun.

Thanks Kevin, I have no hard data on the OTB model ( HK416A2 )

What I meant on the G36 part, was that the G36 was initially developed for the Bundeswehr.

The development of the G36 started as the HK50 or Project 50 in 1990 due to Bunderswehr requests and the G36 was introduced as a ready weapon system in 1997.

The G36 design being the KE part of the OICW came later and the OICW program was not cancelled until 2005.

So the G36 family was not made originally by U.S. input or funds.

    Now, lets more pictures going;

If the G36 was developed prior to KE OICW I think we(US) paid a lot of money for something HK had sitting on the shelf and we almost bought it repackaged as an XM8.
