Comparing a high end 1911 to a weapon that was meant to be built "loose." is not a valid comparison.

A Glock is MUCH more reliable than ANY 1911. Why? Because of the loose tolerances. That is a good thing in a combat weapon.

...and because it doesn't use bent parts that act as extractors and double as springs and must be filed just so, and because it doesn't have a multi-piece variable-geometry dangling link attached to the barrel, and because it has an integral feed-ramp and a geometry that allows rounds to feed at a very low angle into the chamber vs. angling upward and having to wedge their rims between the extractor cum extractor spring and then re-orient to go into the chamber.

It's not just tolerances. It's superior design.

That said, my Noveske upper and lower DO fit tighter than any Colt I have hefted

As to the barrel, heat kills barrels. I think that how a barrel manages heat will play a big role in things. What is S&W's profile vs. Noveske's? I think this matters a lot.

Sure, but the conversation wasn't about Glock VS 1911 so I felt it was too off topic to go into all of that.

Fit between an upper and lower matters for ZERO.

You really cannot get a barrel hot enough (on SA) for it to matter.

Someone brought up meloniting an already chromed barrel. Would that cause any sort of problem with the chrome lining itself?

YES... i had 1 done as a test... the chrome in a barrel is SOOO thin, the proccess will "burn" it off.. it trashed the barrel. to being a 3 to 4moa gun...

The S&W melonited barrels are also 1/8 with 5R rifling. This should yield faster velocities vs. 1/7 twist.

I would actually like to shoot the hell out of a M&P 15 Sport upper to test for accuracy, durability and velocities.

Backup data? That is like asking for backup data when one claims the sun rises in the East. Some things are so self-apparent, a PhD level, peer-reviewed study are not necessary.

Take a class with a large number of Glocks and 1911's or better yet, just go and watch. Ray Charles could figure it out in short order.

And I will take slight umbrage at Grant. It is the designed-in clearances, not tolerances that is a factor in greater reliability.

A lower feed axis and a tight, standard for the magazine makes another huge difference. With few exceptions, Glock has made the overwhelming majority of magazins for its own pistols.
