I have no doubt that the bore of the Smith barrel will be dimensionally correct, it also is unlike any other mass produced AR15 barrel out there, so it was designed from the ground up for it's intended purpose and manufacturing method.

So if you would please save your rolleyes for posts that you have thoroughly read and understood the context of, I would appreciate it.
Actually I'm willing to bet they(S&W) borrowed a button that the barrel maker(Shaw) just happen to have on the shelf from someone else who actually designed it.
A 4150 CMV that has been Melonite treated has a very thick hard layer, usually only drilled/cut with carbide bits and a carbide reamer will not begin to recut a melonite treated chamber where a carbide reamer will cut chrome out of a chamber like butter.

Can't say here but, they exist. 8 twist 5R mid gas.

Really? So TC doesn't make any barrels for them any more?

I have an SBN 16 inch 8 twist middy with a Wylde chamber. I have a little over 3000rnd through it and I also have a borescope.

This barrel looks way better than my last chrome lined barrel did at the 3000 rnd mark and it simply shoots much better than the chrome barrel ever did.

I got mine from AR Performance. The only contact I have ever had with AR Performance was during the ordering process and when I paid full price for the barrel and bolt.

Don't know if Shaw makes every single barrel S&W sells but they sure make some. Straight from the mouth of the man that runs Shaws production barrel plants.

I am a S&W LE Distr and do some consulting for S&W. TC has made their barrels since S&W bought them. Now before that, I do believe that ER provided them with barrels.

With that said, I have not checked on their barrels in about a year and am wondering if S&W's AR sales have grown so big that they have had to outsource (as TC cannot keep up). Will have to check.

In as few as 500 rounds quickly fired the throat of a stainless barrel can look like charred wood. Chrome lined barrels last much longer but chrome is also very thin and will burn through and then the CM under will also begin to look like charred wood since barrels are only 38-42 Rockwell.
Melonite can hit .005-.010 deep including the transitional layer. 4150 barrels that have been Melonite treated have a much thicker hard layer than 4140 barrels that have been melonite treated.
Lands in a barrel are typically .004 tall so the melonite treatment can harden the whole thickness of the lands and another .005 under the lands. The lands in the throat do round off from the flames but they last much longer than the throat of a chrome lined barrel.
There is enough of a difference that testing 1 chrome lined barrel and 1 melonite barrel will prove without a doubt which will last longer.
On top of that the exterior of a melonite barrel laying in salt for 2 years has not corroded yet. No chrome lined and parkerized barrel will last near that long.
Just to be very clear here I am not talking about a Noveske barrel just what I have seen with 4150 Melonite treated barrels and the average chromelined barrel.

On a couple of occasions he has mentioned working on their stuff.
The only detailed info he said was they worked to design a 5.45 button to rifle those barrels. I piggy backed an order on what S&W already had going just to check it out but did not like the 5.45 at all. Then our 8 twist 5R button and airgauge fit perfectly in their barrels...
Only one way for that to happen.

Great info here... From what Ive read on this page, i wouldnt be surprised if this caught on.
Constructor, would you know when in the mfg process the barrels are treated? Is it after the installation of the barrel extension and drilling of the port? Im thinking that would be ideal.
