Something I feel like I should address is the type of VFG one uses. Check it: It isn’t a pivotal part of your rifle—if it breaks it doesn’t change anything with the action or reliability or whatever. Choosing a VFG that has a locking mechanism which will damage your rail system before breaking off is retarded. The only time I’d ever recommend, ‘buying the cheaper part’ is with a VFG. You want your VFG to break off before your rail system warps; going for breakage on the cheaper part first being a good idea etcetera.
My stupid question for the day. Would a quick detach VFG be synonymous with "locking mechanism?"

Dave M, your post is greatly appreciated.

I've gone full circle from plain handguards, to VFG, to AFG, and back to plain handguards, and am still trying to figure out what works best for me. (I swear I haven't been chasing the trends, although it is feeling that way.) The discussion here helps.

    Great post Dave M

I myself use it for an index, like wedging my hand in/on it some, use it to pull the rifle into myself better, and battery/small thing storage (mostly because it is there). The other things mentioned although good are not primary uses currently. On thing I would like to add is I like doing more a beer bottle grip on it when using a Bi-pod, it often makes stabilizing and controlling recoil easier because body positioning and contact points can hinder my normal grip and make it less effective.

I'm a little weird in that I have a stubby VFG behind a magpul AFG2. They're both polymer and light so weight isn't really an issue. I just have the best of both worlds. VFG close to me so that if I have to do CQB for any reason I'm ok. The AFG is further towards the end where it's comfortable.

Heck I have a 12" rail might as wel!

Yeah that's not what I was talking about. Seems a tad too copious?

Most of the time, yes. I had a TD stubby QD but it's since been put on my shorty 870.

I find stubbies to be the current 'best fit' as well.

Hmm..I just took my VFG off a couple weeks ago. I tried multiple positions but just couldn't find one that didn't seem to "get in the way" as some point. I had it on my gun for a while, but after doing a few shooting competitions, I realized that I didn't really like it.

I discovered, after removing my VFG, that I shoot better, more consistently, and more comfortably and in all of my shooting positions.

This thread is tempting me to give it another shot..I just dont know if its for me.

Well just as some would say a 12" rail is too much, I see it as extra real estate to allow my AR to be more than 1 gun at the same time.

    And I dig it!

    Nice article/post!

Hadn't thought of this, good point. In the military on my M4, the KAC VFG would have broke before the rail, on my civvie AR's I've standardized on the RVG which will break first also.

The AFG wasn't quite comfortable enough for me and I never could see spending $80-$100 on the Larue/TD QD ones.

I'm liking the MagPul stubby on my DDM4 so far. My perception is increased control when compared to my M&P15 without a VFG.

I run a VFG on both my guns (personal and issued). I use them as a reference point so everything's consistent, and as Dave M mentioned, its a great aid when I have to carry the thing around for hours on end.

I have run my guns without them before and shot fairly well, but in my experience they really help when you're wearing full gear and can't get the arm extension you normally would.
