Thats why I drive a Toyota Tacoma on a daily basis, and not a '72 Trans Am, with a 454 Super Duty

Bob, I think you have just clarified very well (in my lowly nobody opinion) what LAV is stating about the 1911 in todays world, kind of like driving a 69 Camaro to and from work everyday when a Honda Civic would make more sense. Very cool but not real practical.

Okay so 9% of you really think that Larry Vickers is talking shit about the 1911.. How so? When Vickers him self has used the 1911 platform in combat. Now you can't sit there and tell me with all the years of his combat experience.. Larry can't recommend something other than a 1911 for tactical fighting/combat. I don't think you guys really care to have an open mind on this subject. Look truth is there is better innovation out there. Whether you choose to accept or not.. that's on you guys. If you feel he did talk shit about the 1911. I really feel you need to slooooooowly reread the article once again let his experience sink in. That's my dos centavo.

    LAV knows 1911s very well

    I voted NO!
LAV has both the Operational, Instructional and Maintanance aspects of the 1911 and I believe that he is right on the money with what he stated. Since the 1911 is "NOT" a begginers/newby's type of pistol like a Glock or M9 Beretta would can be. Majority of 1911s do require tune ups even if the owner does his/her homework. LAV I believe was trying to get across the FACT that if a person is looking at buying a 1911 specially the people reading the Article Joe Military Personnel that thinks he knows to shot specially since he/she qualified with a M9 9mm pistol and is not a member of SOCOM might think that they can handle a 45acp 1911. Truth of the matter is that the DOD has been cutting firearm qualifications for most service members exept the Marines since the early 90s. There are many companies making 1911s and not all of them make a product that is 100% all the time. I believe that the main point that LAV was trying to make is that homework has to be done by the young Airman that just got done with his/her first sandbox deployment that is rewarding his/her selves with a shinny new 1911 like his/her father or grandfather used in the past but letting them know that stuff will have to be done and extra money will have to be spend.

I was lucky enough to have had both Marine and Navy Armorer's advice and guidance when I was looking for my first 1911 and for my project 1911 pistol project. I have a Springfield Armory Loaded that was tuned by the SA Custom Shop with the original MIM parts that I recently upgraded with a Nowlin Action kit(Hammer, Sear, disconnector, and springs) Nowlin Barrel, EGW Barrel Bushing and a SA Mil-Spec that has STI, Cylinder and Slide, Wilson Combat and Smith Alexander internals.

    Just my 2 cents

Well,,well,,I have read & watched this thread develop and man what a Thread,,,,(all good) Lots of opinions,,lots of info,,,have enjoyed it all !! In no way is LV,,bashing the 1911,,he is "giving advice" in my eyes,,nothing more,,nothing less,,its funny to watch certain people get there panties all in a bind,,,on both sides,,for the 1911 & for the Plastic guns out there !!! If you want a 1911,,this is what I recommend and these are the things that you should do if you want a Quality 1911 !!! Pretty straight forward I think !!! I own both,,(2) 1911s & a Glock 17,,,,I love them both and both have there place thats for sure. I think Rob_S summed it up pretty good for me,,I agree with alot of his post and take on the 1911,,although I still have them where he dose not,,,and thats OK,,I don't have a problem with that !! I think if you buy a Quality 1911 to start,,,( I have a Combat Elite) your gonna be way ahead. Most people will NEVER take there 1911 to the limits that LV has,,,but if you do thats where the good Smith comes in,,parts will be needed,,etc,,,the majority of us will not get there,to many people "think" they will or think they already have gotten there,,but are a long ways off thats for sure !!!! I have had my Colt CE for a little over a year and have put about 4K through it already. (Big Deal) It has run great,,,& I ran it dirty for sure,,,put at least 6/700 lead 230 grn reloads through it before each cleaning, sometimes more,,,always ran great. But thats still along ways from anything great in my eyes,,,but bottom line I am happy with it and I would trust my life with it if I had to,,no second thoughts at all !!
When its all said and done,,my biggest problem is when I go to shoot which gun do I take,,,my Colt or my Glock,,biggest factor is where am I going to shoot and can I recover my brass,,,(LOL,,I know,,I'm a brass nazi,,can't loose a single piece) If I'm shooting inside or in a place where I can get my brass easy,,I take the Colt 1911,,if I'm taking a Class/training I take my 17 more often,,but have taken Classes & trained with my Colt,,all just depends !!! My buddy that I shoot & train with is always screaming at me,,(with good reason),,pick a dam gun and stay with it,,yea,,yea,,,,I know !!! But I like both and use both,,,& thats just the way it is !!!

I'm not saying he's completely wrong, but the issue of reliability was opened. The point I was trying to make was, that a 1911 is a reliable pistol if kept clean & it's not so tight that it has enough play to keep it going.

How about my point on load out? You going to carry more than 4 mags worth of ammo? For me, as long as my pistol works with no issues after, or over firing 500 rounds between cleanings, it's good enough. Even for combat.

A Glock is a superior weapon & it can take a beating & still run. But, in all but two issues {for me anyway}, the trigger & grip angle it doesn't come close. The 1911 points better & the trigger is just there & surprises me every time.

I have an M&P .40. Love it. The trigger has smoothed out & has a clean break, but its blocky profile & it's low sights make it hard for me to focus on the front sight. I'm going to get Warren 2 dot sights & see if that helps.

Pistols are tools & we have a lot of good chioces, but IMHO, Browning just nailed it with the 1911. Everything about the pistol is anatomically correct for most human hands.

Even the trigger, with it's straight back pull, encourages the shooter to have a smooth straight back pull. It's a serious shooters pistol. You have to be a proficient shooter in order to get the most out of it.

All Larry is saying is, it's just not a good choice of pistol for a novice.

I work with all manner of recent combat vets, most of them can't shoot that well, and know next to nothing about guns, including those issued to them.

They "know the sound it makes when it kills a man"

FWIW, I have my CIB. And, we know LAV, Howe and Smith carried a 1911 in "gunfights".

So again, whats that got to do with anything?

ETA: Are really going to get into a dick measuring contest, over who's been in a "gunfight"??

Nope, never claimed to an expert on all things guns. I do, however, believe that actual stick time imparts a certain perspective beyond what can be gleaned from simulator-only stick time and classroom lectures.

LOL--I was issued a reprimand for making a very similar comment not long ago, so I think I'll let this one lie.

Me? No, I got my CIB, never had to shoot someone though. Though some believe , my war didn't count

    "stick time"...cool.

So are you saying the three individuals I named, including Vickers, their "stick time" doesn't count?

I'm sure somebody, somewhere, killed a guy with a sharpened MRE spoon, and E2 rank....doesn't make it ideal.

The gun doesn't know its in combat.
