1911's need love, attention and preventative maintenace. Modern plastic guns need a good washing. Both are great - just know what you are getting into.

LV states right in the article that while the 1911 is the superior pistol, it's also more of a "masters" pistol; it's not for everybody and the "casual" shooter is better off with something else.

I agree with this...all my semi auto pistols are 1911's & people get confused when I suggest a glock or M&P for their first gun.

"why shouldn't I get the one like you have??"

Because you are not ready for it & is not a good gun for the novice...period.

I will admit that I do enjoy the banter amongst other gun guys 'in the know' about their plastic toys & how the 1911 is the best pistol on the planet.

The thing is, I lovingly maintain my lawnmower, like all the machinery around me.

I was "the guy" who could always keep the re-re-re-re-manufactured M60 with the cobbled together feed tray running.

But I know folks who could kill a coffee pot.

The 1911 no longer holds any advantage on accuracy or reliability. The whole ergonomics thing is a matter of personal taste. It does have a nice trigger. It is not a weapon for long deployments without armorer support.

I think Larry summed it up best when he said it's time to retire the 1911 and the M14 to a museum

    Yes, I do have a 1911. A Kimber Series 1.

    When Larry speaks, I listen.

He is one of the top 1911 experts on the planet, and for me, there's little reason to abandon Gen 3 9mm Glocks for a more maintenance intensive and expensive platform.

I think Larry is just being honest and up front about it. I use to be a strictly 1911 guy until I got fed up with all of the BS and money that it takes to get one to run well. The 1911 is great and accurate as any pistol on the planet just as Larry said but they require a certain degree of attention and patience that some other platforms do not.

Maybe I'm reading the wrong article? The link in the OP's post takes me to an article written by someone named Rob Curtis, who briefly quotes LAV in two or three places within the article.

Maybe we should have been presented with an article actually written by LAV, rather than a hearsay second-hand account with minimal quotes from LAV, before we comment on what LAV thinks about the M1911 platform...............

Many of us here including myself, have been lucky enough to hear what Larry thinks about the 1911 in person. The article is pretty close to spot on regarding his thoughts.
