...And he's made it clear on his TV show what he really thinks.

Not sarcasm....I'd like to know what he's told you.

Based on the two quotes contained in the article, the message I'm taking away is one that I've stated elsewhere in another post. The M1911 is not for the simple or the lazy.

So, to answer the question posed by the thread; no, he is not bashing the M1911. As with other machines such as cars, boats, bikes, etc......not everyone should own a particular make or model just because they can afford one.......

he's been touting the shortcomings of the platform for a long time. this article is 10 years old now, and he points out the plunger tube and the extractor as serious design flaws.

I'm with LB, I've heard what LAV has to say first hand. If you wanna know, ask him.

There is a fine line between "bashing" and being honest and forthright. Take it from a NYer like me.

Many of the comments made here, are part of the problem.

Stating its not for novices, its for enthusiasts, needs special attention, blah blah blah, only adds to its mistique, and drives more "wanna be's" to it.

Does it have plus's, yep, but they are fewer and farther between, and other guns have closed the gap, drastically.

In the end its an awfull lot of trouble for 7 rounds...

    Bob

PS: QC flaws are not an indication of a flawed design. My comments about 1911's are based on high quality examples. Low QC gun's made in the phillipines only makes it worse.

    Hecho en Brazil, amigo.

Take a look at many of the polymer pistols around and you'll find examples of declining quality control (google Oakland, California's Police recent problems). They are not limited to any brand.

Larry's comments are just as valid for the M1911A1 as they are for any machine -- think of a typical American woman and her car or major kitchen appliances, or the average third-world knucklehead and his AK. She unconsciously switches them on with no regard for maintenance, fluids, filters, etc. Anyone can be blissfully ignorant of their gear -- which speaks for Kalashnikovs and a lot of other off-the-rack, unmodified "Stuff."

Buy a rack-grade genuine Colt (pre-MIM and plastic, pre-Series 70) M1911A1, add decent modern magazines, and don't screw with it and it's a pretty decent weapon that requires maintenance. Just like changing your own oil or rotating your tires it's a machine.

Isn't that the truth! I learned my lesson years ago by ruining a brand new Colt Combat Government model. I friend talked me into ****ing with it until it was broke. I didn't know what I was doing and thought he did. Now, I by a Glock and shoot it as is.

Polymer pistols made 1911's obsolete just like automobiles made motorcycles obsolete.

More like how fuel injection made carbureters obsolete.

Although I run the risk of making JSantoro cry (again), I offer the one car and guns analogy that actually makes sense (written by yours truly).

The Glock/M&P/HK modern polymer pistols compared to the 1911 are sort of like the Acura NSX compared to the Ferrari. One is far cheaper, much more durable and reliable and gives you 95% easy of what the other does and doesn't require a mechanic on call. The other is flashier, more expensive, and 95% of its owners can't outdrive an equally skilled owner of the less expensive product.
