    11.5" upper questions: Lightweight/Suppressor Use/BFH

I hate it when you guys are right, a few months ago I bought a 14.5" LW Middy upper to use as a suppressor host. Most of you all (mainly IG) told me to just wait until I was in a free state and SBR it and I told you to pound sand.

Well here I am, sold my 14.5" at a loss buying an 11.5". This will be a range toy, not a duty setup or anything. It will be suppressed 100% of the time and shoot no further than 200 yards. This will be run hard.

    So here are some questions

    1. Is the LW profile useful on an 11.5" upper? Its only 11.5". A gov't profile can't weigh too much, right? This won't be doing mag dumps on full auto but it will have alot of rapid, semi auto suppressed firing.

    2. This will wear an AAC Brake and M4-2000. Personally I am fine with a standard barrel, but in regards to what I said above would a BFH be beneficial at all?

    3. Can I posess an 11.5" upper if I have it "mated" to a stripped lower? Does it have to have a "pistol" buffer tube on it to be a "pistol"? What about a complete lower with no stock body/buffer tube?

    4. I chose 11.5" because it combines the best in terms of length (If I'm paying $200 for a tax stamp I am going to go short) with reliability (as BCM said, it increases the overall length of the weapon only 4% while drastically increasing dwell time). However that doesn't mean other lengths are necessarily bad. Would 10.5" be better? 12.5"? A 10.5" bbl with the M4-2000 would equate to about a 17" overall.

    Thanks guys.

I can't answer many of your specifics, but I can tell you that I first built a 7.5" upper, and it was nasty loud. Went to an 11.5" HBAR and it was great but incredibly heavy - heavier than my 16" m4 carbine. Went to a DD lightweight barrel and it rocks. The lightweight profile is something like 1/2 lb lighter than the DD M4 barrel (can't remember exactly what the DD rep said) but DD themselves talked me into the lightweight barrel because they said the majority of LEO buys were going with the lightweight barrel and it was getting great field reviews.

After adding the EOTech, Vltor stock and light, I'm glad I shaved 1/2 lb where I could.

Oh, I also installed an AAC brake last week in prep for my 762SD. Can't wait, and from the pics I've seen of this setup it won't be overly long. You should be just fine with the shorter M42K.

I am in the process of an 11.5" build as well, and was advised against the light weight barrel for suppressed used. I was told that it will cause much unnecessary shift in POI, I would however be interested in responses to this........

My 11.5" will be wearing an M4 2000 as well.

I have BCM 11.5" w/ DD Lite rail. I have shot DD MK18 and notice very little difference in weight, but a nice difference in reliability and accuracy. 11.5" is a good length

For a 100% suppressed gun I would personally choose a Noveske N4 in 5.56 as I think the profile makes the most sense and offers the best balance between rigidity and weight. Especially with an end-mount can like the M4-2000.

With an A2-profile barrel, the skinny portion is ~.625" dia. under the handguards and at the FSB it flares out to ~.750 and remains around that same diameter until the end. IMO the A2 may be somewhat better than the lightweight, but not all that much better.

I have an article here on observed POI shift in with an Ops 15th model and an A1 profile barrel. I think it has some amount of applicability here because the Ops 15th is a reflex design and mounts flush with the FSB on an 11.5" barrel, largely negating the difference between A1 and A2 profile.

However, if you are shooting suppressed 100% of the time then shift is a non-issue. You may also find that the reliability issues are not as bad as you'd think with a 10.5" barrel, and frankly I think that the reliability issues of a 10.5" are largely negated in general these days.

My 762SD is 3 to 4 months out but I'd be glad to report back on POI shift - if a LW barrel leads to excessive POI shift, it should be magnified with the 762SD due to the slightly longer package. I was surprised there wasn't more of a weight difference btw the m42k and the 762sd.

Rob do you know the weight on the N4 in comparison to the Noveske SS barrel? The N4's are not sold separately on their website so I cannot look up the specs on it.

    Thanks

    I don't have the weight on the 10.5" N4 but I have 1lbs 6oz for the 12.5 N4 and the stainless 12.5" at 1lbs 12oz.

Ok brother thanks, so not as huge of a difference in weight between the two as most would lead you to believe........

I am considering the 11.5" SS barrel with SB for my SBR build.........

Is that just because they don't do an 11.5" N4? What made you choose SS?
