I think any reasonable person can agree, that at a minimum, you need to shoot at least a few hundred rounds of your carry ammo, and if there are any problems, you need to either get a reliability job, or get a new weapon.
Beyond that, many features just boil down to preference. Mods are worth it if it makes you enjoy shooting the gun more.
I wasn't directing that post to you directly, just a general statement of whether a gun needs work or not. But with your 2 failures, it's hard to say. It's definitely something you should diagnose. Did you check for extractor tension? Also, what kind of mags were you using at the time?
I'm in a similar position... I purchased an SA Loaded (my very first 1911) on the centennial. It should pass the 1000 round mark on my next range trip and so far so good.
The only thing I've done so far is swap out the grips for Pachmayrs.... All I'm seriously thinking about right now is getting rid of that horrible two-piece guide rod for a GI setup and switching the hex grip screws for flat-head screws.

I bought a used (gently) SA Loaded with NS for the Centennial. All I changed out was the MSH-I put one in with a lanyard loop, grips (added Pachmayers) and added a mag with a rubber base. All for the MEU(SOC) 1911A1 look. It's a plinker and I'd expect it to run for a while, at 50-100 rounds a pop.
See and that's a perfectly fine reason not to mess with it much if its just for plinking. But mine isn't. Its going with me to classes and will be a duty weapon or atleast have 1k rounds a month through it. I would just rather change out parts now or add something than have it break while shooting
And there in lies the rub, the SA loaded is not typically considered a "high end" gun. That doesn't mean its a bad gun, and can't be tuned up nicely. But there is a reason the FBI went with Pro's and not loaded's
The Loaded, as I recall, has the two piece barrel, some have glued in ejectors, mim parts, including some critical, like the slide stop and extractor.
Either the Springfield or the Kimber, had an improperly cut barrel bed.
Then there will usually be other minor fitting issues, that may not cause problems until farther down the road.
Contrary to popular belief, you are not just paying for a name, fancy finishes & features, and other "bells & whistles", when you buy a higher end or custom gun. Your paying for top quality parts, that have been hand fitted by an expert.
As far as upgrading, see the thread about "Oh no, I bought a BM", if its what you have, you can work with it. A loaded can tune up nicely.
Jaxx,
I would suggest you take a look at 10-8performance. Read Hilton's article on selecting a duty use 1911. Also a lot of reading in the Service 1911 section of 10-8Forums, will also yield quite a bit of useful info.
It has been awhile since I followed the latest 1911 trends, or even cared much.
