    FN bolt technical curiosity

So I have been seeing a lot of FN bolts for sale on different forums. I've read that everything made by FN, in regards to AR15's, is top notch and hard to get.
So at $50 for a bolt I figured I would buy one. When I got it, the bolt was certainly FN, but there were no brass marks left on the bolt face from high pressure testing. Normally I buy LMT bolts and they have all had brass left on the bolt face.

Not that it really matters, but out of curiosity and for general discussion, I wanted to ask if you think FN is just doing batch testing on their parts? I suppose they could clean them after testing.

I would not jump to any conclusions just because there is no brass marks on the bolt face.

To my knowledge, FN does not sell AR15/M16 components to the public. So if these are actually FN produced Bolts, I would wonder how they got out.

Grant I purchased 2 FN bolts and bolt carriers and would be happy to send one to you to verify if in fact these are true FN or at least high quality. I will be using one during class this week so any failure will be posted. Let me know if sending it will clarify the OP's concern.

No need to send them to me. As a FN LE Distributor, I can tell you that FN does not offer these things for sale (not even to me). So my guess is that these are either fake, stolen or from some DRMO program.

I've been seeing "FN" bolts on Gunbroker and the EE of TOS too. Also, there are several FN A2 uppers on GB right now.

Not being an expert on the arcana of small part markings, I find that I am not entirely confident in the authenticity of these items, and as Grant points out their provenance is suspect too.

Bolts are tested BEFORE they are parkerized. As a metter of fact they are in a stripped state when tested. The brass witness marks are from test firing.

FN is prohibited from selling parts to the commercial market as it would constitute illegal use of the TDP. This is the reason a company who has a large commercial presence better weigh any run at a secondary M4 contract very carefully. Once they get a copy of the TDP, they just closed the doors on their commercial sales.

The bolt you have is more than likely stolen government property or a forgery. A photo or two would help with identification.
