You must not know the Govt if you don't think that they won't come and talk you over a $53 dollar item.

    This.

I bought a Grip-Pod off eBay about 18 months ago. I got a call yesterday from NCIS stating that some Marine stole it and sold it for personal gain. Obviously, they want it back. Luckily, I'm only out $50 and am glad I'm not that Marine.

I can't say for sure the bolt is stolen, but when a LMT bolt can be had for $66, is it worth risk?

Funny. Are the issued one's serial numbered or such? I didn't notice any per-part ID numbers on mine. Might have missed them.

No. It came in bubble wrap with instructions that had a NSN. I think the guy was found out and they looked at all the people who bought from him using eBay/Paypal data and used that contact information to call people.

in this case, I'd be very willing to cooperate but I'd be a mite hacked off if all they did was retrieve it and I was left with a hole in my pocket. I'd hope restitution was somehow part of the deal...

The Govt is ALL OVER EBAY. They watch everything on there. Then, after they catch the seller, they go through all the sales, get your home address and show up (depending on the item).

I find it hard to believe, but intellectually I know I ought not to be surprised at any dumb thing the government does. I gotta say, I'd have lost that grip pod somewhere or something, just on principle. I'd cut the bitch in half before I gave it back, not the buyers fault in this case in my opinion as they are sold to the general public all over. I bought a slightly used one off the sale forum here cheap is why I was asking about identifying numbers on specific parts, if it can't be distinguished from one bought retail they are SOL in my opinion.

Yeah, I will be lucky if I ever get that money back. They want all the records, etc. so they will know how much was paid, so maybe someday I will get some restitution. At the end of the day, it's $50 (as of 18 months ago) that I have forgotten about. I don't mind cooperating with them on this and, since I have been doing so, they are super cool about it; they know my intention wasn't to defraud the govt.

That would be the dumbest thing one could do. Once they have notified you that it is stolen and you then try to sell or destroy it, you then become a subject of the investigation and subject yourself to some trouble you didn't want. It's their property, they want it back--what's to argue about?

EXACTLY!! It is buyer beware, especially on ebay (if it's too good/cheap to be true, it's HOT!)
