I don't mind cooperating with them on this and, since I have been doing so, they are super cool about it; they know my intention wasn't to defraud the govt.

That would be the dumbest thing one could do. Once they have notified you that it is stolen and you then try to sell or destroy it, you then become a subject of the investigation and subject yourself to some trouble you didn't want. It's their property, they want it back--what's to argue about?
It's a matter of principle. It's one thing if it's an FN bolt that is NOT sold to anyone outside the mil/le, or if it's something they can point to a lot number or a serial number or whatever and prove it's gov stuff, I'll give it up but I damn well expect some compensation from someone.

In the case of the grip pod, assuming it is NOT specifically marked, and is indistinguishable from one bought retail, or at a gun show, or anywhere, I call BS. If they want the value back tack it onto the fine of the guy that sold it, they have his ass anyway. Where does it stop? What else is laying around your house that the mil or le happen to use also they might want? I know this isn't generally the case but it's too short a step for comfort. I consider myself a fair guy and a pretty straight shooter, but "because we say so" wasn't good enough when I was a kid and it isn't good enough now. They can start all the trouble they want, it's wrong. It's going to get me killed one day I realize but I don't back off when something is wrong.

I hear you and appreciate your point. But I checked the location of the seller yesterday and it's near Camp LeJeune, NC. I think the evidence is pretty cut and dry in this case. It may be worth the govt's trouble, but it ain't worth mine.

I don't blame you for what its worth. I don't have much to loose or I might think differently, the one I got was also a little beat up and didn't come with paperwork, so hey.

Why is it that FN can't sell a bolt to the public but Colt can sell their bolts directly to civilians ? Is there a difference between what Colt sells to the public and to the .gov when it comes to bolts and BCG's ?

    No, all the same.

Colt is made up by 3 different divisions (Commercial, LE, Military).

That is really good to know. Thank you for the info !

I would gladly pay Colt $20-$30 more to get a legit HPT MP tested bolt built to the TDP.

Right here. I would still love to see how the government could prove it's stolen if they were to knock on my door.

In the case of the bolt, it's stolen one way or another (unless it's fake) by virtue of the fact that FN does not sell them to the public. That isn't the same as YOU stole it, hopefully, but that's the theory. Also "because they say so and they are more/bigger than you" I think.

In the case of the grip pod where they are in fact sold identical models to civilians, that's a good question. I suspect it falls under the "because they say so" category and nobody can afford to argue with them over something so small. Least that's the theory.

That's near as I can figure it anyway.

a thief sold stolen property on Ebay and the feebs tracked those transactions. Now, if the buyer wanted to try a, "I sold the Ebay one and bought an identical one later" ploy, he can have at it.
