I could get by with one LMT Mk18 if I had to. I would rather have a gun that I can get in and out of tight places with that needs a few more clicks of elevation at long range than one that shoots super-flat but is longer.

Where I think people miss the boat on the ballistics equation is that if I shoot someone at 15 feet, I really need them to stop what they're doing, lie down, and reconsider their poor life choices right now. If I shoot someone at 400 meters, unless they're the love child of Roy ****ing Benavidez and Manila John Basilone, they're going to be distracted enough by the hole(s) through their torso that for the remaining time they have enough oil pressure to hurt me, their effectiveness will be reduced markedly. Being that that is the case, the 10.5" will work fine for most scenarios. Besides, as a civilian, I'm more likely to have 40 meters be my long range than 400.

IIRC, our friend KevB has transferred a few souls to Jesus at 400 or so with a Mk18.

Give me my 10.5" with a good light and a couple of different optics and I'm GTG.

This will be my new setup, it should be complete in a couple weeks. It is what you described- my do it all, and only, carbine. Simple, light weight, functional, rugged.

-BCM 16" light weight midlength upper, Spike's Tactical lower
    -Daniel Defense Omega 9.0
-Daniel Defense A1.5 fixed rear sight
Vltor IMOD (not the lightest stock, I know, but thinking it may help balance out the 9" rail)
-Tac light in Gear Sector Mount
    -Magpul MOE grip
-Possibly a QD sling as well.

actual fighting rifle as title implied: A stock M14, lots of spare parts for it, and a lot of ammo.

Note: if the choice is AR platform only, my bad.

midlength on a 16" barrel or carbine gas on a 14.5" with appropriate RDS, etc...

my DD M4v1 which is a carbine (7") gas system with fixed FSB through 12" rail, I had shortened and permed to 14.5 with TLR1s, CTR, MOE, DD 1.5 rear sight and T1 makes a nice light, compact, good handling gun. I could be happy with this as my only carbine.

for general farting around, I like a 16" LW barrel and midlength gas. I have a BCM with 11" TRX over a shaved FSB, Troy flips front and rear, Emod, MIAD, and 1-4 in ADM Recon mount. I could drop the Aimpoint PRO on this from time to time and be just as happy...

For those of you who don't know him, Pat McNamara comes from the same background as several other well known instructors, such as Larry Vickers, Kyle Lamb, and Brian McKibben. As noted in my recent AAR of his TAPS class in CA, Mac mentioned that he prefers a 5.56 mm DI 16” barrel AR15 with RDS (flip up 3x magnifier is a useful addition) for the majority of his carbine use, including indoors for CQB; he specifically mentioned LaRue and DD AR15’s as working very well for him.

Doc, thanks for your input in this thread. I am taking the same class with Mr. McNamara later this year.

I would like to know why in your earlier post you suggest "at least" a 12" rail?

    Thanks

The only thing I might change is going to a 1-4 optic,

I'm also one of the many that has their one rifle already setup how they want it. So mine would be/is,

    LMT CQB MRP 16" 5.56/223
    EoTech 512
    Magpul AFG
    Magpul B.A.D. lever
    Magpul A.S.A.P. end plate
    Specops single point sling
    LMT fixed front sight

I getting ready to add a Troy rear flip BUIS and a Surefire M952 light. As soon as I pick up a new barrel and do my paperwork it will go from 16" - 10.5" with QD can.

    Mine is set up ideal for me and any use I can think of. The specs are as follows;

BCM standard 16" middy upper with a Centurion Arms C4 9" rail.

Tango Down stubby VFG and SCAR rail covers.

DD A1.5 fixed BUIS with an Aimpoint comp M4s in an ADM SOCOM mount.

Surfire M300A "mini scout" light in a Gear Sector mount.

Magpul CTR stock with enhanced butt pad and Magpul ASAP and RSA sling mounts for my MS2 sling. I run Magpul PMags.

This works for me as a "do all," or "general purpose" carbine and I can't really think of many situations that it is not adaptable to.

Could you post a picture of this rifle? Sounds like a very solid setup.
