After posting my setup on the bottom of page 1, I've been doing some thinking. While yes, a 10.5" barrel rifle has less OAL, a 14.5" barrel is more versatile. I can accurately engage targets out to at least 500, and it's still a small enough rifle for all but the tightest situations. Having engaged from a vehicle with an M4, and having trained with this size rifle for the last 5 years, this is what I'm most comfortable with. With a variable power optic, like a few have been talking about, such as the Elcan Spectre DR, one would be able to switch from 1x magnification to 4x magnification with the throw of a low profile lever and not worry about kinobs, etc. Thoughts?

Swiss Arms 553ch with an ACOG and white light. 551 will do as well.

ETA: changed my mind and it would be the 551 w/rail, ACOG and white light. In my area I can't imagine very much CQB in a SHTF senario. Would mainly be 75-400yds.

My favorite AR is my 14.5” DD M4 V1

    SOPMOD stock
    Battle Comp 1.5
    Troy VFG
Eotech XPS on a LaRue mount
    Troy folding rear sight
    TLR1 at 12 o’clock but soon to be replaced with a X300
BFG 2 point sling and a Gear Sector mount

I wish that I had give the 12.0 FSP a chance when they first hit the market rather than waiting till this year. I think the only thing I would change would be going to a LW barrel but I can live with what I have. I also don’t have a good reason for switching out the TLR1 other than I feel that the Surefire might be a little more robust and Surefire has such fantastic customer service.

I would like to start a discussion on a setup for a fighting rifle. If you could only have 1 rifle to do everything for you, ie: training classes, range use, HD/SD, etc, how would you have it set up?

What barrel length? FSP or Recce? What stock? VFG? Optic or Irons? What light? Muzzle Device? Etc.....

A lot of times we get caught up in what's new and cool, and we lose track of what is really necessary, not that it's an issue, but as we pile up these rifles, many of us still have that one rile that is always the go to one, the one that you have no doubts about any of the gear on it and is your work horse.

Right now I have two awesome rifles, but im just now starting to make a third... it will be a general purpose rifle, and will be with me wherever I go. That is the rifle that I plan on taking with me.
    it will be:
14.5" M4 lightweight barrel with CAR handguards and TLR1 mounted 12 o'clock in front of the FSB. Trijicon TA33R8 with matech BUIS and fixed front sight. 20 round PMAG and magpul CTR stock.
Its lightweight, small, and has good range for me. Perfect for GP.

With carbine hand guards how are you going to mount the TLR1 in front of the FSB at 12 o‘clock? I know of the rail section that attaches to the FSB so that you can mount a light at 3 o’clock or 9 o’clock but not anything that places a rail section in front of the FSB. Or are you talking about a 12” FSP rail like I posted about above and sapper36 posted pics of on page 2?

If you don't mind me asking, why a 14.5 with a battlecomp 2? I'd think you'd either get the bc1.5 and weld it for a legal length or go shorter since it's an sbr?

Or is this a duty M4?

If a mod feels this is hijacking the thread just delete this but a comment was made in this thread and it is relevant.

There are solid and unprecedented reasons that we do so LowSpeed. Most of us are your intelligent brothers in arms. Not some fantasy airsofters playing "doom & gloom". I mean this without any sarcasm in the least and with full sincerity. It really sucks sometimes being a well informed citizen. It would be so much easier and less expensive to be like so many of the uninformed masses and just go around with a normalcy bias in mind, thinking “that because we’ve never experienced a shtf situation we never will.” And if it does “the government will protect me and take care of me and my family”. But nothing to worry about. The world financial system isn’t on the brink of utter collapse and no one is out to get us! All is fine.

The fact is we live in an increasingly dangerous world, with a fragile and highly dependent infrastructure. Banking, transportation (food distribution. We moved away from a warehouse based system to a "just in time" delivery system years ago) & power. If anyone of them goes down for an extended period (say 2 weeks or better), the others will soon follow. The vast majority of people would begin to starve after 2 weeks.

A U.S. Army War College report warns an economic crisis in the United States could lead to massive civil unrest and the need to call on the military to restore order. This report is from 2008 and is more relevant today than ever. If uncle Sam is preparing for something should we do any less for our loved ones?
