Best Sound Reduction from Suppressed Caliber out to 300 yards?

I'm considering a new build and plan to make this build for a farm/home defense weapon and want a quiet round suppressed that will still stop wild animals (up to a deer in size) out to 300 yards. I would love to build on the AR platform.

Are there any rounds that have terminal ballistics out to 300 yards and still have very quiet results after being suppressed?

There has to be a round that's quieter than 5.56 and still keeps great terminal ballistics, right? I've read that subsonic 5.56 rounds are iffy for semi-auto rifles, and I want something that will go bang every time.

5.56mm suppressed isn't bad. It's a little loud, but I'm comfortable with it.

I hear 7.62mm is pretty quiet though.

If you want quiet, you need subsonic rounds.

If you have subsonic rounds, I would not shoot anything living with them at 300 yards.

If the subsonic was a pistol caliber, i'd not use it past 50 yards.

If it was a a subsonic rifle round (308 or 300 BLK) I'd not use it past 150 yds on a living target. There are very few reliably expanding subsonic rifle bullets.

This is a case of 'no free lunch'. If you want to be accurate and do damage at 300+ yds, you need to go with good supersonic ammo, and deal with the louder noise.

If you want good terminal effects at 300, you need supersonic 5.56, .308 or 300 BLK (or 6.8, 6.5, etc).

Centerfire rifle bullets are just plain loud.

I was concerned with the effective range of subsonic rounds. Thanks for the clarification.

Which supersonic round (5.56, .308, 6.8, 6.5 etc etc) would probably have the lowest dB reading?

308 out of a bolt gun.

The 5.56 is a loud little bastard- very high-pitched 'ripping' sound.
the .308 is a little deeper pitched.

I guess I should have stated my question a little better. Going suppressed (assuming the best suppressors for each caliber), which semi-auto round would be the most quiet?

Same results from an AR platform? This weapon isn't going to be a bolt gun

300 BLK out of an AR.

Plus, you then have the advantage of just switching mags to supersonic if you need to reach out, or subsonic if you want to be very quiet closer in.

That's a great point, although you'd need to know the holdovers for the different rounds. I have no experience in this area, but I would imagine the ballistics would be pretty different?
