Sounds like a perfect SBR round then...how short can you go and still maintain at least 100 yd effectiveness?

I know this will depend on what bullet is being fired, but I'm just looking for a "in general" shortest acceptable length such as the 10.5" in 5.56.

    Thanks Jason.

300BLK is a great MP5SD replacement, with substantially more versatility than a 9mm SMG. In an SBR configuration 300BLK has far better terminal ballistics than 4.6mm and 5.7 mm PDW's. Likewise 300BLK has the potential for better terminal performance and intermediate barrier penetration than 5.56 mm from SBR's. In supersonic form from 16" barrels 300BLK offers terminal ballistics on par with 7.62x39mm or lower weight .30-30's. It should be a very good LE caliber with the right ammunition. The key is getting appropriate .30 cal bullets produced that are designed to work at the lower 300BLK velocities instead of .308/.30-06/.300WM velocities. So far we have not seen any optimized 300BLK loads.

6.5" or so. I'd want to keep it at at least 8" though so i could use a standard carbine handguard

Im going to be running a 10.3" with a pistol length gas sytem.

The guys over at delta company arms said both subsonic and supersonic lock the bolt back with that barrel, and maintain performance.

The next load coming out is a 125 grain Premiere Match OTM (custom bullet just for 300 AAC BLACKOUT). Then a 125 grain AccuTip (custom bullet just for 300 AAC BLACKOUT). Then UMC, also an OTM (custom bullet just for 300 AAC BLACKOUT). Then CoreLokt (custom bullet just for 300 AAC BLACKOUT).

The Premiere Match has already been shipping.

How would it be more compact and lighter than a 308 if it uses the same action?

Because 300 BLK was meant to work efficiently in short barrel, you won't need as long a barrel as 308 to attain maximum velocity. 308 rifles are generally 20 - 26 inches, aren't they? 300 BLK will work fine from 16 inch barrel. AND, 16 inch bolt action carbine is a very compact rifle, no matter what action it's built on. As for light weight, because barrel is shorter, barrel can have small diameter and still have same stiffnes as longer one with big fat barrel. So shorter and lighter barreled bolt gun will be fairly compact and light.
