I also prefer the fixed FSB and as most know, it is the most robust front sight you can get. The shift toward folding front sights on the new designs is just evolution in my mind, but I don't see the standard FSB going away any time soon.

    to beat a dead horse,

No I don't think FSBs will die anytime soon, especially with the 100,000 M4s heading to the army, all with FSBs.

I will offer a counterpoint. Standard M4 configurations have a FSB, because no service branch that orders them has asked it to be changed. However, look at all of the modern iterations in the M16 FOW: Mk18, Mk12, HK416 (and IAR), none of these newer systems have FSBs. As much as some people want to stick with the legacy system, we are now an optic oriented military (for good reason). Optics across the board improve warfighters' ability to make hits at all ranges. Irons sights have become "Back Up Iron Sights" for a reason. If you are running an ACOG or varible optic, why intentionally run a FSB if it is strictly for "back up" use? If the Army or USMC decided to buy all new M4s today, I'm sure Colt would be happy to pin lo pro gas blocks and install longer rail systems.

The Army did just buy all new M4s recently. They still have FSBs to the best of my knowledge. They're also working on two separate programs that will either replace or improve the M4; in addition to researching a new rail system.

They're talking about upgrading existing M4s with piston kits.

No they did not replace all existing M4s. They just added more to the arsenal. They are not going to change to a new system overnight, they just bought more of what they already have, you know because everybody has to look the same. The Army progresses in small arms at a glacial pace. I'm not talking about adding to the armory, I was referring to the military buying all new rifles or uppers. If they do, I feel like it will not have a FSB or will be a folding FSB similar to Knight's or the 6400.

I see, I misunderstood what you meant by new M4s. While I feel that you are probably right about switching to folding BUISs, I can not say I find this to be a good thing as I still think two fixed sights and a lower 1/3 riser may be the best compromise. In any case what the military chooses will in many ways shape the civilian world for years to come so here is hoping they choose well.
