I'm sorry, I hate to ask, but what's a pencil barrel referring to?

Its a lighter weight barrel because it is thinner then the standard one. There are different degrees of how thin barrels are. A "pencil barrel" refers to one of the thinest thus making the rifle lighter.

It's like "pencil thin"... refering to barrel diameter. It's the gay fad of late.

"Pencil" is what Olympic Arms referred to their LW barrels as 10 years ago.

Wouldn't my original issue M16A1 be considered a pencil barrel? I remember it being rather thin.

Correct. The Military has been using pencil barrels for a long time and continues to request this profile (SCAR L, 416/Navy).

The OP has probably already thought about this, but....

You could buy a 6720...harvest the upper...offer to swap lowers with someone who bought a SP6920, but wanted the uber-cool LE/Mil roll-mark. Functionally, your problem is solved, and you didn't have to disassemble your gun and swap receivers. However, it may or may not offend one's sensibilities to have lower marked for a different model than the configuration would indicate.

pencil barrels sound like a terrible fad....

Are roll marks really a big deal? I understand it's obtuse to have a LE/MIL ONLY rollmark, but if it's on a bargain gun that you want, who cares?

I was careful at the start of this thread to say that this is not about if you like or dislike the LE/GOV. markings. I do not, but am happy for you if you do. Lets not start name calling, cursing, putting others down and such about what some like and others do not. And, this behavior is already starting about pencil barrels. How childish.

I really don't care about the rollmarks. I realize some people like it and some don't.

As for the pencil barrels, I don't think I called anyone a name, heck I don't really know much about it other than what was said.
if it is a fad, then in my opinion, it's not a very good one, that's all I said.

I ask these questions that may come off sarcastic because I'm not familiar with the private ownership of AR15s or the culture therein. I carry an M4 but that doesn't mean I'm familiar with why magpul lowers are so expensive.
