why is their heavier profile, but lighter than GP ideal? As I understand GP is lightweight under the hand-guards, and heavier towards the muzzle. It would seem that you would want the thick towards the receiver, but WTF do I know?
What's now called government profile is basically derived from the M16A2 profile, which has relatively lightweight contour under the handguards for weight savings, and a roughly 0.73" contour past the gas block so that soldiers using the rifle as a prybar don't bend the barrel (exerting force through the handguards, I assume). This probably made sense to some US Army person back in the late 1970's (and might make more sense if you consider the recruiting standards of that era). It really doesn't make a lot of sense if you're smart enough not to use the rifle barrel as a prybar. YES, heavier towards the breech generally makes more sense for stiffness of the overall barrel - and an essentially non-tapered constant diameter (apart from the gas block being slightly larger) would work well too.

As for what's best for a "go to" that depends a lot on what you intend to do. If you have a full auto and are planning to play SAW, something heavier makes more sense. If you carry it a lot, or just don't expect that there will be any fight remaining after the first 20-30 rounds, lightweight probably makes more sense.

    Well I took the bait.

Home surfing the internet all day due to a sick baby. I pre ordered one to replace my CMMG 20" upper. Sick children are expensive in more ways then one.

Hopefully in a couple weeks I'll have a range report. I have a lower and optics ready for it. Going with my ACOG TA31F as glass. I'll be leaving the MOE handguards on there, I added a MOE grip to the order for it.

Hopefully its as good as advertised.

    Very interesting.
Somewhat of an experimental set-up really. From what I gather a lot of modifications and changes - barrel profile, gasport, buffer-weight - wonder what kind of testing has been done before offering.
As much as I like the presentation and the attractive cost of the package, like to see some reviews first. Well worth the extra $20....

Has anyone heard anything about these Spikes uppers? Anyone have hands on experience with these uppers and barrels? Specifically these FN CHF barrels? Are these "new" barrels to the market or has this specific barrel been around? I would appreciate if some of you guys could shed some light on this upper and barrel. Thanks.

It is not possible for FN to simply have military barrels just around and discarded on to the civilian market for upper builds.

A: FN M16 barrels are not CHF
    B: FN M16 barrels are not Mid-lengths

So if FN made them, they for sure aren't surplus barrels like you allegedly find at a gun show

Thankfully they are not gov profile, or gov anything, I'm going on faith that FN wouldn't make or let there name be pimped on a crappy barrel, so they ought to be alright. We'll see. Course when I win a M203 as a door prize somewhere I'll be bummed out.

Spikes is doing a better job than anyone else at watching the market and delivering what consumers are wanting. Solid products at a great price.

I gotta a lot of credit to AIM for continuing to order great set ups!
