It's a great idea until people start complaining they are tired because their weapon is too heavy, or a whole community is shot all to hell because someone thought it was a good idea to field a 60 round mag, but not actually train someone to shoot with even a 10 round mag.

No, problem. The only way I remembered it is because it was a hand out from a SWAT course I took back in 2003.

When I contemplate weight, I don't think about what I have to carry and manage as much as I consider what the 120lb IBO already wearing a vest, belt, and carrying a 7-9lb duty rifle has to. Then, the effect of added weight on how they are able to employ those assets in a fight.

I have never heard LEOs complain about weight of their carbines. Before my dept adopted P-MAGs they restricted our Officers to USGI 20 rounders. Many carry sixty rounds as is with with a Redi-Mag.

This thread is not about training or the lack there of, it's about whether or not the new offerings from SF would be a good tool in the LEO's tool box.

    Taking into consideration:

. . . and combined with the examples that have been provided through out this thread I say these mags would be a viable option for LE though I highly doubt many police admins would ever approve them due to political correctness.

Holy shit. I can certainly see where a 60rd'er would be nice in this situation. But so would a couple of extra mags.

Get a mag carrier. The mag will put holes in your cargo pocket. Rounds will move forward in the mag. Lint will get introduced into the mag. The mag will make noise. The cargo pocket flap wil get in the way during a reload. The mag will not be oriented with any consistency. If you have to go to a second (or third) mag, some douche bag is likely throwing lead your way. Do you have time to deal with all of these issues? Cargo pocket...bad idea.

My personal setup has a 30 round Pmag loaded to capacity in the carbine which is mounted in a roof rack secured to my trucks kennel. I carry a 20 round Pmag loaded to capacity in a Canter Mass Integrated Mag pouch. 4 additional 30 round Pmags are loaded into a Blackhawk! OMEGA ELITE M16 MAG POUCH. The Blackhawk mag pouch hangs from the kennel under the carbine from a fastex buckle. A matching fastex unit is already on my Sam Browne for easy on/off capability. Depending on the reason for deploying the carbine, I can tailor my loadout to METT-T. Either way, I always have at least one reload.

I like cool new gear as much as the next cop but I don't see it being super practical for patrol. I used to run a ready mag on my patrol rifle and it only took clearing a middle school we found unlocked one night to cause me to take it off. The extra mag just gets too heavy and bothersome at the low ready for 45 minutes. I just leave a 30 rounder in the gun and keep a 20 rounder on my duty belt. I have a thigh rig with two more 30 round rifle mags and two pistol mags shingled on. I keep the buckle on my duty belt and the rig with my rifle so I don't forget it when grabbing the rifle. I also have a go bag with them in the trunk with more ammo if the situation calls for it. I'm very comfortable with this set up and it has taken me several years to get everything just right.

But I just don't see where a 60 round mag would fit into a setup. Real estate on our belts are very hard to come by, and I just don't think it would fit or work in a thigh rig, vest or go bag. The only option I could see would be leaving it in the gun but again the weight could quickly start to suck. Maybe have it in the gun during patrol and when you go on a call and grab the rifle swap it out for a smaller mag with the only exceptions being an activer shooter or man with a gun call. Other than that I don't think it would work for me. The more ammo you can carry on you is always better though. If people were dying i wouldnt want to be the guy to leave them half way thru the fight to run back to the car for a reload. It'd be fun to own one though. This is just my thinking of course.

How often does law enforcement go through more than 30 rounds without a chance to reload?

    NEVER?

    Not never. Rarely.
