I'm not sure your response is relevant to anything in this thread. I wonder what percentage of the members here, whether cop, citizen, or military have ever fired a gun in defense of self? Very few of the citizens, a few of the cops and military probably.

So, by your question would it then be fair to say that most of all three categories don't need a firearm of any kind for defense?

That brings to mind the rural LEO. In some areas, a backing unit can be immediate, 10, 20, 30, 1hour away. In AK, it can be hours, even a matter of a day or two, depending on weather conditions.

It's all relative to the officers/deputies/troopers environment.

My understanding is that some of the larger single officer patrol zones in AK are the size of a state in the lower 48.

Point is, I would want any edge I could have in those circumstances.

If the added weight doesnt bother you then I say go for it. After several barracaded persons call were I had to mainatain a position for a really long time, my priority is making my rifle as light as possible. I will stay away from them simply due to the added weight. There are not many scenarios as a LEO were a 60 round mag would really be needed as opposed to a quick combat reload. Not saying you will never need it, I am sure those folks back in the day of the LA shoot out wish they had a surefire 60rd mag. Thankfully those days are not all that common. I would not mind having one 60rd mag loaded just in case of such scenario but would keep a 30rd mag in my rifle for everyday use.

As a LEO there are a lot of things I'll probably "never" have to do. I doubt I'll have to deal with a suicide bomber, a dirty bomb going off in my city, or be on COPS... but that's not really the point is it? Preparation is part of the job.

I might put one in my bailout bag for active shooter type situations but that would be about it. Also, our policy for AR's specifies nothing larger then a 30 round mag will be used. I figure that if there was an active shooter type incident, I could probably get a pass on the GO violation

The mags look like a cool toy and I'll probably grab one just to have it but doubt I'll ever truely use it.

As a non-LEO it is my opinion that for LE a 30 caliber rifle would be more useful than a 60 round 5.56 mag.

Trouble is, to be prepared for everything is to be so overburdened that you are unable to deal effectively with anything. True of firearms, camping, cycling, engineering, law, just about everything I reckon.

If you ever become a law enforcement officer, you can beg your chief to authorize 300 BLK and BAM! best of both worlds (as far as this thread's topic and your caliber preference is concerned).
